Ontonagon (USONG)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. Ontonagon Harbor is the harbour of refuge along the 79nm stretch from Keweenaw Waterway to Black River Harbor. The harbour is used extensively by commercial fisherman. Coal is received at a wharf on the W side of the river just above the mouth.

Ontonagon, Michigan, is situated at the mouth of the Ontonagon River on Lake Superior.

A dredged entrance channel leads from deep water in Lake Superior between the parallel piers to the mouth of Ontonagon River, then upstream for 0.4nm to just below the Ontonagon Street Bridge. The approach to the river is marked by a lighted bell buoy, and the outer ends of the piers are marked by lights, a fog signal is at the W Pierhead Light. The controlling depths are 6.0m in the approach channel, then 5.4m in the channel between the piers, then 2.7m to the bridge.

Prominent are a blue tank, stacks and buildings at the paper company on the W side of the river mouth and a blue water tank approx 1nm SE of the river mouth.

The "SR 64" swing highway bridge at the head of the dredged channel has a 8.2m E draw and 9.4m W draw, each with a clearance of 2.1m. The fixed railroad bridge 0.4nm upstream has a clearance of 2.4m. Overhead cables 182m below and above the railroad bridge have clearances of 6.0m and 10.6m, respectively.
