Akutan Harbor (USKQA)

The port handles fishing vessels, fast ferries, general and reefer cargo. A newly constructed harbour built to the W of Akutan Cannery Terminal is used to cater for an increase in fishing vessels. Akutan is well sheltered from all except E winds, but heavy williwaws are encountered during gales.

Akutan is located NE of Dutch Harbor-Unalaska on Akutan Island. It is on the northern side of the peninsula which juts into Akutan Strait.

LOA 150.00m, beam 23m, 11,793DWT and draught 8.80m.

A recommended anchorage is approx 274m off the village, in depths of 40m. Vessels can also anchor in the broad bight off the S shore in depths of 27.0m, with the E end of Akutan Point bearing 018°. The bottom at both anchorages is very sticky.

Akutan Harbor is entered 3.25nm SE of Ridge Point. The SE entrance point is a point on the W side of the N entrance to Akun Strait. The best approach to Akutan Harbor is from N through Akutan Bay. Pass at least 1nm off the NW side of Akun Island and 0.5nm E of Akutan Point, then into the harbour, giving the shores a berth of over 300m. From the NW, pass at least 1nm off North Head and steer approx 107° until Ridge Point is abeam to starboard, distant 2nm, then steer 150° until 0.5nm off Akutan Point and from there into the harbour.
