Cold Bay (USCDB)

Cold Bay was an important logistics centre during World War II, its airport has long paved runways providing a regional centre for air transport and international traffic. Cold Bay Village is located on the W side of the N part of Cold Bay, 16nm inside the entrance to the Bay. The area is designated as a Most Environmentally Sensitive Area. There is one, single 'T' shaped pier in the harbour area. A ferry service runs from Cold Bay to False Pass.

Cold Bay Dock is located at Cold Bay village within Cold Bay on the SW coast of Alaska.

LOA 122m, draught 7.0m, beam 16.7m, 6,000DWT.

The best anchorage in Cold Bay, with good protection from sea and swell, is near the head of Leonard Harbor (55°07'N 163°31'W). The depths are from 29-40m.

The port is approached through the Gulf of Alaska and Cold Bay.

There is a local magnetic anomaly approx 14°E near Vodapoini Point. Navigation aids may be damaged during severe winters or moved from their charted positions by heavy ice. There are channel buoys. Lights mark the NE and SW ends of the Pier. Useful markers are Kaslokan Point No 2 Light (a square metal frame, red triangle day mark located at 55°06.25'N 162°31.53W). The Delta Point Light (framework tower, red and white chequered diamond daymark located at 55°11.49'N 162°38.68W on the W side of the bay 7.0nm NW of Kaslokan Point. Aero Light (55°12.07'N 162°43.16W) located on the airstrip used by commercial aircraft at the abandoned Air Base.
