Su-Ao (TWSUO)

The port has 13 general cargo berths and total of 2,610m length. Imports are mainly of coal, fuel, paraxylene, slag, steel billets, while exports include cement, pure paraxylene acid and potassium sulphate.

Summer.

Su-Ao is situated 50nm to the S of Keelung.

LOA 243.97m, draught 14.1m, beam 42m, 50,000DWT.

Approx 4,000,000t of cargo and 700 vessels handled annually.

Anchorage area bounded by joining the following positions: ..... 1. 24°35.4'N 121°53.0'E 2. 24°35.0'N 121°53.9'E 3. 24°34.4'N 121°53.3'E 4. 24°35.2'N 121°52.8'E Outer anchorages: Vessels may anchor 0.4nm S of the harbour entrance to E of the S breakwater in depths of 24.0m. The recognised quarantine anchorage is within the outer harbour, clear of the main fairway, in depths from 19.0m to 21.0m, sand. Prohibited anchorages: Anchoring within the inner harbour is not permitted without permission. Anchoring is not permitted near the underwater cables.

The main approach to Su-Ao is from SE and the port is entered between protective breakwaters, the entrance being approx 280m wide. The channel has a min depth of 15.4m.

Entering and berthing of vessels can only be done during day light.

Compulsory for vessels over 500GT and is available daylight hours only for larger vessels. Pilot boards in position 24°34.9'N 121°54.4'E. Vessels are required to wait approx 2.0nm offshore of S breakwater until pilot's further instruction.

The harbour limit is an arc, radius 1.0nm, centred on Pei Chiao Light (24°36'N 121°53'E).

Container terminal N point light (white round concrete column, 11m in height) (24°35.9'N 121°51.9'E). Inner N breakwater elbow light (red octagonal concrete column, 19m in height) (24°35.9'N 121°51.9'E).

Inbound berthing: 0800hrs to sunset. Outbound sailings: Over LOA 160m, 0800hrs to sunset, less than LOA 160m, 0800hrs to sunset from berths No 3-9 only.

Mean spring range 1.2m, mean neap range 0.5m.

There are 4 tugs available, 1 x 1,600hp, 2 x 2,400hp and 1 x 2,530hp.

The port is affected by severe tropical storms and typhoons, mainly between July and September, August being the most frequent month. SE winds in the summer send in a dangerous sea.

ETA should be sent to agent 7, 5, 3, 2, 1 day and 12 hours prior to arrival. Any changes to ETA should be advised 24 hours prior to arrival.

Permission to enter harbour must be obtained from the naval signal station on the N shore 0.1nm WNW from Pei Chiao Light (24°36'N 121°53'E).

Pratique should be applied for 72 hours prior to arrival, the following information is required: ..... 1. Name of ship 2. Place, time and date of last port of departure 3. Name of port departed within 10 days prior to arrival and departure date 4. ETA 5. Type of Ship Sanitation Control Certificate, date and place of issue 6. Number of crew and passengers 7. Any illness or death onboard within 10 days of arrival, (if yes, specify) 8. Any abnormal death of rats within 10 days prior to arrival 9. Any food cargo from an infected area 10. Others, (Physician onboard or person/cargo transferred during voyage). Ship Sanitation Control Certificate or Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate can be renewed.

NOR should be tendered as soon as vessel has arrived/anchored, subject to pilot station. Tender NOR with Master's arrival declaration cable.
