Tartous (SYTTS)

A major commercial harbour with facilities for handling various cargoes including containers, grains, sulphur, phosphate, crude, general cargo and Ro-Ro. The port offers a sheltered harbour, protected by two long breakwaters, consisting four basins separated by Moles A, B and C, with approx 5,130m of berthing space. Approx 4nm N of the harbour is the Tartous Oil terminal and oil refinery, exporting crude oil via the two CBMs. Tartous port will be leased to Russia for 49 years. It is to be use for transportation and economic purposes.

Tartous lies approx 35km N of the Lebanese border.

Harbour: LOA 207m Offshore: LOA 280.18m, draught 15.8m, 120,000DWT.

Approx 16,400TEU handled annually.

Vessels waiting to enter harbour can obtain anchorage 0.3-0.7nm W of the head of the W breakwater, in depths of 14.0-20.0m, rocky bottom, good holding ground. Tanker anchorage: 34°57.0'N 035°49.7'E. Prohibited anchorage: Anchoring is prohibited in the approaches to the berths.

Syrian regulations require vessels to approach Tartous on a course of 090° from a position 12nm W of the harbour entrance, keeping between the parallels of 34° 54'N 34°56'N. From the vicinity of 34°55'N 035°49'E at the beginning of the approach route to Tartous, the track leads E to the pilot boarding position. From the pilot boarding position the track leads initially ENE keeping clear of a 5.5m rocky patch, 0.8nm N of the head of W breakwater, and also of a dangerous wreck, 0.5nm farther NE, to a position about 0.5nm NW of the head of W breakwater. The track then leads SE, passing between a Lightbuoys No 1 and 2 (lateral) which mark the entrance to the buoyed entrance channel, and then between the breakwater heads, from each of which a light (black metal framework tower) is exhibited, into the harbour.Useful mark: Light exhibited from Jazirat Arwad (Ile de Rouad) (34°51'N 035°51'E). There is a least charted depth of 14.5m and width of 200m in the entrance channel to the harbour. Within the entrance there is a turning basin, 0.25nm in diameter, dredged to a depth of 13.5m, with max depth on some berths of 13.0m. CBM Moorings: Daytime berthing only at CBM's between 0700hrs and 1600hrs in winter (Oct 1) and 0700hrs and 1800hrs in summer (Apr 1). The Mooring Master will remain onboard during mooring, loading, unloading and unmooring operations. Prepare 4 x 220m mooring ropes aft, two ropes for each aft winch and another two ropes for aft breast lines. All ropes are connected to wires by mandal shackles. Anchors must be fitted with anchor buoys, with 36m of line. Harbour moorings: There are numerous moorings on the inside of the W breakwater. Vessels berth with both anchors down and stern lines to the breakwater, bows out.

Compulsory. The pilot boards at the anchorage in position 34°54.65'N 035° 49.35'E (1.5nm W of the harbour). Berthing at Tartous Oil Terminal during daylight hours only, unberthing throughout 24 hours. Pilots board in position 34°57.00'N 035°49.75'E.

The harbour can be entered throughout 24 hours subject to weather conditions.

Range 0.5m.

Tugs are available.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly. Winds from E slightly predominate from Nov to Feb. Strong winds are comparatively frequent from Dec to Apr, occurring about 20% of days from Jan to Mar. It has been reported that SW gales, and the accompanying swell, make some berths in the harbour most uncomfortable. Sudden changes in weather can occur especially in winter months.

Notify ETA 72 and 24 hours prior to arrival. Tankers should send ETA 72, 48, 24 and 4 hours prior to arrival indicating quantity of cargo required. Vessels should contact the oil terminal at least 2 hours before arrival at the anchorage area, for berthing instructions.
