Main exports are groundnuts, fish and groundnut oil. A limited amount of general cargo is handled.

The port of Ziguinchor is situated in the S of Senegal, 56km from the mouth of the Casamance River.

Largest vessel handled: LOA 123m; draught 4.5m; 28,787DWT.

Approx 50,000t of cargo handled annually.

Outer anchorages: Anchorage can be obtained by small vessels 0.1nm S of the ruined pier at Ouloum (12°34.3'N 016°44.3'W) in a depth of 7.0m, hard sand. Anchorage can also be obtained off the E pier at Karabane in depths of 8.0-10m. However, this is exposed to NW winds. Vessels should avoid anchoring in the approaches to the Marigot d'Elinkine, as it is narrow, busy and regularly used by military craft. Inner anchorage: Vessels can anchor off the town in depths of 8.0-13.0m. Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is prohibited in the vicinity of the submarine cable, and on the track of the ferry close E of the cable.

The depth of the navigable channel in the river varies between 6.0m and 18.0m.

Pilotage is compulsory for vessels of 150GT and over, except for vessels exempted by law. Vessels should send request for pilot through the agent as follows: ..... If using pilot boarding point off Pointe Djogue, 48 hours before ETA. If using pilot boarding point at Dakar, 24 hours before ETA. Pilot boards in the following positions: In the vicinity of North Lightbuoy No 12, 14°40.6'N 017°23.4'W. In the vicinity of Casamance Lightbuoy, 12°36.0'N 016°54.4'W. At the entrance to the channel, 12°32.8'N 016°49.9'W. Due to constant changing of depths in the Riviere Casamance, transit without a pilot should not be attempted.

The depth over the bar varies, being 3.6m MLWS and 5.2m MHWST. The river passage is undertaken during daylight only.

Mean spring range 0.6m; mean neap range 0.2m.

Arms & Ammunition List 2 Great care should be taken in completing all Store Lists, Slop Chest Lists and Personal Effects Lists as customs check all stores, including refrigerated spaces. All paints onboard must be declared. Customs also board vessels at anchor and inside territorial waters, inflicting heavy fines in cases where stores, etc, are not prepared and ready for inspection. Also, heavy fines are imposed for any discrepancies. Even when calling at the port for emergencies (eg, Medevac) a full set of documents must be prepared before entering territorial waters. No vessel is allowed to leave Dakar without having received onboard an Outward Manifest duly visaed by the local customs authorities. Vessels leaving without such manifest will be heavily fined. Masters must have all documentation ready, prior to arrival at the pilot station.

Notify ETA 96, 48 and 12 hours prior to arrival. Message to include cargo to discharge, drums to discharge (if any), draught on arrival, expected draught on departure, last port of call and next port of call. Vessels carrying hazardous and/or strong smelling cargoes, must declare to the harbour master at least 48 hours prior to arrival, the nature/quantity/packing of these goods as well as their stowage onboard. The same applies for Arms and Ammunitions.

Quarantine regulations are strictly enforced and no communication with the shore is permitted until the vessel has been granted pratique.
