Sundsvall (SESDL)

A well sheltered port with an easy entrance and broad and deep fairways. The port handles general cargo, dry bulk, Ro-Ro, cruise, passenger, container, liquid cargo and LPG.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Zone for ships of 100m or less. Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Sundsvall is situated at the mouth of the River Selanger which flows into the head of Sundsvallfjarden.

LOA 250m, beam 33m, draught 11.3m, 75,000DWT.

Approx 1,500,000t of cargo, 24,000TEU and 200,000 passengers handled annually.

Anchorage may be obtained E of Tjuvholmen (62°23.2'N 017°22.6'E), in depths of 29.0 to 32.0m, mud, or within Sundsvallsfjarden, in depths of 10.0 to 20.0m clay and mud. Anchorage may be obtained by vessels with draughts up to 9m close off the quays at Ostrand.

The port is approached through Sundsvallsbukten and entered through Draget, an area of water between the SW end of Alnon and the mainland to the W. The harbour is entered either by passing to the N of Tjuvholmen (62°23.2'N 017° 21.8'E) or SW of Tjuvholmen. The alignment of Kokaren Leading Lights (020°) leads along a channel authorised for a draught of 10.8m, from Sundsvallafjarden into the harbour of Ortviken. At night, if using the channel SW of Tjuvholmen, from a position 0.3nm SW of Stenvik (62°22.0'N 017°24.7'E) keep within the white sector (325.5°-331°) of Tjuvholmen Light until abeam of Langholmen, the spit of land on the NE side of Kubikenborg harbour, then adjust course to pass between Tjuvholmen and the mainland to enter Sundsvallsfjarden.

Pilotage is compulsory for the following vessels: Tankers LOA over 90m and beam 16m. Dry cargo LOA over 100m and beam 17m. Barges LOA over 70m and beam 14m. When passing Alno Bridge max LOA 70m and draught 4.5m. Pilots board from pilot cutter in position 62°20'N 017°42'E. The winter boat has speed 10kts and summer boat speed 22kts. Pilotage area: Between Lat 62°08'N and Lat 62°50'N including Gaviksfjarden and Angermanalven. Pilotage is available throughout 24 hours: ..... 1. In the above area for the following: a. A maximum speed of 7.0kts applies from S of the old ferry crossing, between Filland on the mainland and Alvik (62°25.7'N 017°23.7'E) on Alnon, to Alnobron.

Rules: These tugboat rules shall be applied in addition to what is set out in general ordinances and in Harbour Regulations applied in the port of Sundsvall. Oil Harbour: Vessel carrying dangerous cargo arriving at or departing from the port. ..... 1. Vessels over 8,000DWT without extra manoeuvring equipment, 1 tug shall be used. 2. Vessels over 14,000DWT with extra operative equipment, 1 tug shall be used (security boat). 3. When a vessel, independent of size and carrying dangerous cargo of LPG, arrives at or departs from the port, 1 tug shall be used. The definition of dangerous cargo and vessel carrying dangerous cargo is found in item 1.3 of the Safety Regulations issued by the port of Sundsvall.
