Karlshamn (SEKAN)

A SE Baltic port, accessible all year round with a harbour protected by breakwaters, with good anchorage. It is a major commercial port well equipped to handle most types of vessel including large tankers and bulk carriers. Imports: Copra, oil seed, coal, vegetable and mineral oils, and general cargo. Exports: Pulp and paper products, stone, grain, timber and animal feed.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Zone for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Port of Karlshamn is strategically located in one of southern Sweden's main industrial area and the centre of the new trade routes between Scandinavia and Eastern Europe and the Baltic.

LOA 245m, draught 13.5m, 100,000DWT.

S of the inner harbour, in the outer part of Karlshamnsfjarden, there are depths of 17.0-25.0m with bottom of sand and clay. This anchorage is exposed to S winds. With local knowledge, anchorage may be obtained in a depth of 11.0m, clay, in an area 200m wide W of Kastellet (56°09.6'N 014°52.0'E). Anchorage is limited to 24 hours in this area unless permission to extend the stay is granted by the authorities. Prohibited anchorage: In certain areas W and E of the Starno peninsula and within the minefields laid in the approaches to the port, anchorage is prohibited.

Approach and Entry: The main approach to Karlshamn from the S or SE is from a position E of Hanobanken, where the route leads NW through clear water to a position approx 5nm S of Karlshamn. Approach may also be made via Hanosund, the track leading NNE to a similar position as above. From this position separate channels lead to the main harbour and the associated harbour at Stilleryd. Vessels approaching from the E should pass well S of Tarno (56°07.0'N 014° 58.5'E) Karlshamn Centralhamnen: The port is approached on the alignment of a leading line and leading lights through a broad channel marked by buoys which divides 1nm S of the harbour. The main entrance channel then leads NW on the alignment of leading lights through a channel marked by buoys and lightbuoys to enter the harbour between breakwaters on the W side. An alternative branch channel leads NNW on the alignment of leading lights, through a channel marked by buoys, to enter the N part of the harbour but this channel is partially obstructed by a line of dolphins at the degaussing range N of Kasellet. Stillerydshamnen: The harbour is approached on the alignment of leading lights through a broad channel marked by buoys and light buoys and entered through dredged channels marked by buoys and light buoys.

Ortholmen Lighthouse: F1 WRG 3s 11M, leading to the inner harbour. Kolo Nedre Lighthouse: Oc WRG 6s 13M, leading to the Stilleryd area. Lighted and unlighted marks and buoys lead the traffic in the fairways.

Arrivals and departures, weather permitting. Restricted Area: A military protected area is established south of Starno. Degaussing Range: Vessels must pass N of the DG range situated N of Kastellet and manoeuvre carefully in its vicinity.

No tide, but water rises with strong N to NE winds, and falls with strong S or SW'ly winds.

There are 2 harbour authority tugs available, 1 x 2,500hp and 1 x 2,000hp. Tugs own ropes usually used, both tugs are equipped with fire fighting equipment.

Prevailing winds: Mostly S or SW winds prevailing all year round. Ice: In general the harbours are normally ice free, but if necessary the channels are kept open by ice breakers.
