Anchorages
Good sheltered anchorage can be found in 18.0-22.0m. Caution: Anchoring should be avoided in the vicinity of a disused submarine cable between the NE shore of Tulagi Island and the S side of Makambo Island.
Approaches
Leading lights: Front light (red metal framework tower, 9m in height) (09Β°06'S 160Β°10'E) standing on a drying reef. Rear light (red metal framework tower, 12m in height) (0.6nm N of front light). The alignment (009Β°) of these lights leads from S into the harbour, passing (positions relative to front light): E of Mohawk Bank (2.2nm SSW), then E of Freeman Reef (1.8nm SSW), and close W of a 10m patch (1.7nm S) lying 0.3nm W of Woodford Reef, then E of Soghonangola Island (1.5nm SSW), which is easily identified and which has a light (plinth) on its S end, and Kokomutambu Island, joined to it by a narrow neck of foul ground, then W of Southern Cross Reef (1.3 to 0.5nm SSE), and E of Sylvia Reef (1.0nm SSW) marked on its W side by a beacon (red and white). Then the track leads NW to the main anchorage, passing NE of a beacon (red and white) marking the extremity of a reef extending E from the SE end of Tulagi Island. Caution: The leading lights are not easily distinguished when the morning sun is low, or in poor visibility. A prominent conical hummock on the E shoulder of a low round hill on the skyline N of the lights is of assistance in their identification. Tulagi Harbour may be approached through other channels as follows: Between Mohawk Bank and Freeman Reef, a deep channel 100m wide. Between a 5.9m patch lying 0.25nm N of the shoalest part of Woodford Reef, and the S end of Southern Cross Reef, a deep channel approx 200m wide. Between the N end of Southern Cross Reef and the reefs and foul ground extending 0.25nm SE from the front leading light. This channel leads to Tulagi Harbour from Ghavutu Harbour.
