Indiga Port Project. Indiga, a deep-water port, is a flagship project in Russia’s Arctic territory. The project is designed to improve the export capacity along the Northern Sea Route. An LNG Terminal is planned as part of the project in which the Korovinskoye and Kumzhinskoye fields are expected to supply gas and condensate to the terminal via pipeline for export. The Four ice class 170,000mΡ– LNG carriers are to be ordered for the export trade. The port is expected to be able to accommodate a range of cargoes including; coal, general cargo, timber and potassium fertilisers. Cargo is to be handled within specialised quays as well as a universal handling terminal. Indiga will become the largest seaport hub for the transhipment of international transit cargo due to the fact it will be exporting cargo from Russia to the U. S., Canada, Europe, China (mainland) and Asia-Pacific countries, and vice versa. A 500km railway is planned from Karpogory in Arkhangelsk region to Indiga on the eastern coast of the Barents Sea, however as of 2023, construction of the railway has not begun. Indiga is believed to be able to support up to 80 million tons of transshipment. This is categorised under: 30 million tons of coal per year; up to 17 million tons of bulk-oil; 6.4 million tons of LNG; 3.8 million tons in the universal handling terminal; 1.8 million tons per year all in specialised quays. Construction and completion of the port project has been delayed due to climate change and rising sea levels in the arctic territory. The opening of the port is scheduled to be between the end of 2024 and 2025. The entire construction work is believed to be completed by 2028.
