Colon (PAONX)

The main berthing areas for Colon are at Coco Solo, comprising of Colon Container Terminal (CCT) and Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT). There are also cruise vessel berths and passenger facilities on the East side of Manzanillo Island.

Colon port is located near Cristobal, in the Bay of Limon, on the Atlantic coast.

LOA 368.99m, beam 60m, draught 15.2m, 320,054DWT.

Approx. 11,100 vessels, 24,000,000t of cargo, 5,000,000TEUs, and 409,000 passengers handled annually.

Several anchorages are available outside the navigable channel for Panama Canal. See port entry for Cristobal concerning local anchorage areas.

The access channel has a depth of 15.0m, the breakwater opening is 200m wide and the turning basin has a radius of 600m and is dredged to 15.5m. The length of Berths 1 and 2 of CCT has been reduced by approx 130m at the SE end allowing for improved access.

Pilotage is provided by Panama Pilots Services Corp. Compulsory for vessels over 100GT and available 24 hours. Pilots board in the vicinity of 09°24.54'N 079°53.91'W. (0.5nm N of the Fairway entrance). Vessels calling at the Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) - The ship's agent is responsible for contacting and notifying tug services, pilots and other ancillary service providers of the vessel's ETA and ETD.

Puerto Colon lies between Punta Manzanillo (09°21.9'N 079°54.7'W) and the N side of Cristobal Mole.

Bahia Limon E Breakwater Light (09°23.284'N 079°54.935'W). Bahia Limon W Breakwater Light (09°23.296'N 079°55.336'W). It is reported these lights are difficult to see against the terminal lights on approaching the port. Colon Container Terminal: Lights showing positions of the ends of Berth 2 and the end of Berth 4 have been moved, following lengthening and shortening of the quays.

The Panama Canal Vessel Traffic Scheme covers the approaches to Colon and its terminals. Vessels should contact the VTMS when approx 5nm from the breakwater and advise they are proceeding to Bahia Manzanillo.
