Pedregal (PAPED)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. The port is used mainly by coastal traffic carrying general cargo, fertilizers and bulk commodities, and by fishing vessels.

Pedregal is located on the Pacific coast of Panama.

Vessels intending to enter the port, or if awaiting a pilot, must anchor near the Fairway Buoy at the port entrance at San Pedro mouth. Around this buoy are depths of 21.0m to 24.0m.

Pilotage is compulsory. It is customary when docking, to run the vessel's bow into the mud and back the vessel into the dock. As the pilots speak very little English, Masters should be advised how this manoeuvre will be effected. A local pilot is available and it is recommended that his services be used due to periodic changes in the deep water course of the river.

Entry and departure during daylight at HW. HW ranges between 3.35-5.30m and vessels cannot enter if their deep draught exceeds the height of HW due to the sandbar across the estuary. It is preferable for the vessel's draught to be at least 0.3m less than the height of the high tide. Occasionally due to heavy swells at the entrance to Pedregal, vessels may not be able to enter if the HW does not grant enough clearance between the vessel's draught and the height of the HW. Tides given for Balboa are the same as those in Pedregal and occur at approx the same time.
