Puerto Armuelles (PAAML)

Panama Maritime Authority has planned for the construction of the new Multipurpose pier. There is the Petroterminal de Panama (also known as Charco Azul), 5km to the S of the port for the accommodation of VLCC's engaged in the Alaskan oil trade. See separate entry for Charco Azul.

Puerto Armuelles is located on the Pacific coast of Panama in Charco Azul Bay.

Vessels may anchor 0.5nm from the pier, where there are depths of 33m. However, due to the great depth of water in front of the quay, care must be taken in letting go the anchor, it being necessary to find places where the water is not so deep. It is recommended that for Masters of vessels arriving for the first time in the port that the pilot be consulted when anchoring. There are no aids to navigation indicating the best place to anchor.

United Brands Company has a pilot who is available 24 hours a day. Pilotage consists in mooring the vessel at the quay from the anchorage, for which the vessel must position a ladder on the port side. The mooring operation is fairly complicated and United Brands provide a gang of men who board the vessel and manipulate the cables used in the mooring process. Mooring at the quay is always on the starboard side of the vessel and the bow must be pointing out to sea. The pilot must be contacted by the ship's agent and requested by the vessel on Ch 12 to the Port Authority or Ch 16 to United Brands Company. The pilot launch is white and has no VHF radio. The pilot and mooring gangs board approx 1nm E of the pier.

A light is exhibited from the head of the pier at Puerto Armuelles (08°16'N 082°52'W).

On the quay proper, restrictions exist as follows: Vessels are not moored during bad weather and mooring is permitted in daytime only, unless there is an emergency.

There is a port radio station at Puerto Armuelles. The Port Authority has SSB equipment which takes calls on frequency 7447.5kHz. VHF: Port Authority: Ch 12. United Brands Company: Ch 16. The range of these stations is 50nm.

Should be given 48 hours and again 24 hours before arrival.
