Tanabe (JPTAE)

The port handles general cargo, timber, dry bulk and processed fish. The vessels are loading from lighters at the anchorage or the mooring buoy.

Summer.

Tanabe is situated on the Pacific coast of Honshu facing Shikoku over the Kii-Suido, also at the head of Tanabe Wan at the mouth of the Aizu Kawa.

Off shore: Draught 10.3m, 35,000DWT.

There is a good anchorage in a depth of 7.5m mud, approx 0.5nm S of the entrance to Aizu Kawa. Anchorage is also available at 33° 42'N 135° 19'E, in depth of 40m sand.

The port is approached from the SW and entered through Tanabe Wan. Draught limitation in the channel is 10.5m at HW. The fairway has a least depth of 5.2m, on the leading line 0.25nm SE of the entrance.

Not compulsory. Pilots are available throughout 24 hours at the anchorage and should be advised to the agent 72 hours before ETA. Pilots embark at the anchorage and not available after sunset.

Ohama Leading Lights are situated on the SE bank of Aizu Kawa: Front Light, is exhibited from a column (red and white in bands; white triangle topmark), 10m in height. Rear Light, from a similar column, 18m in height, close ENE of the front light. The lights in line, bearing 065.5°, lead into Tanabe Ko between Okina Shima, Nadano Shima and the shoals extending from Maru Yama on the N side, and Naka Shima Lightbuoy and Abo Se Lightbuoy on the S side.

Caution: Fish havens lie in the approach to the port. Possibility of entry or sailing after sunset: No restrictions, but pilots are not available after sunset.

None presently, but can be brought from Wakayama when required.

Strong winds are most frequent in Feb and during Aug-Sept. Spring and summer are the rainy seasons and fog is sometimes observed in Feb.

Vessel's should advise ETA at the pilot boarding position 72 hours in advance.

Free pratique: Usually vessels anchor in the port of Owase or Shimotsu, where the authorities board and grant free pratique. Radio pratique: Unavailable.
