Piombino (ITPIO)

The port handles a variety of cargoes in both the new and old port areas including wet and dry goods and ferry passengers. Vessels drawing an excessive draught may lighten at the anchorage in depths over 25.0m.

Piombino is situated at the N end of the Gulf of Follonica facing Elba Island, south of Livorno.

MAX LOA 300m, beam 36m, draught 12.5m, 80,000DWT.

Approx 4,000,000t of cargo, 28,000 vessels and 3,000,000 passengers handled annually.

..... A Vessels with a draft of 7m or less. It lies 0.7 mile NE of the harbor entrance within the pilotage area. B 1.5nm E of harbour entrance, outside the pilotage area, for tankers awaiting a berth at Torre del Sale Oil Terminal. C1-C 0.35nm SE of harbour entrance, outside the pilotage area, for vessels with draught greater than 7.0m. An area designated for the lighterage of dry bulk cargoes lies about 1.3nm SE of the harbour entrance.

The port is approaches from the S via designated lanes of the Traffic Separation Scheme in the NW part of Golfo di Follonica, E of Piombino signal station (42°55.3'N 010°32.6'E). The depths off Porto Vechio di Piombino are very irregular and there are numerous depths of less than 9.0m in the roadstead. An approach channel to Pontile Italsider, 0.125nm width, has been dredged to a depth of approx 12.0m in a 122° direction from the jetty head.

Compulsory for vessels over 500GT. Vessel should advise Pilot of ETA 1 hour prior to arrival. A listening watch must be maintained on VHF Ch 13 as follows: ..... 1. On entering: From 3nm off the port entrance until completion of berthing. 2. On leaving: Immediately on leaving from the berth until 3nm off the port entrance. Pilot boards within 1nm ESE of Molo Batteria and for deep draught vessels, 2nm SE of Molo Batteria. Pilotage also provided for Tor de Dale, ENEL Oil Terminal, 2.7nm E of Piombino.

Vessels entering and leaving the harbour must keep to the starboard side of the approach channel and proceed at the slowest speed consistent with manoeuvrability. Speed limit in the Traffic Separation Scheme is less than 15kts and not exceeding 12kts in the precautionary area. Passenger vessels have priority over cargo shipping. Vessels entering harbour must give way to those leaving.

Range 0.3-0.6m.

A Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) has been set up in the Pada di Piombino must use the designated lanes of the scheme. Departing passenger vessels including ferries, bound for Isola d'Elba, and other vessels of less than 500GT bound N from the port, must use traffic lane U1. Passenger vessels including ferries, arriving from Isola d'Elba, and other vessels of less than 500GT arriving from N must use traffic lane E1. Departing passenger vessels including ferries, and other vessels of less than 500GT, bound for Olbia, must use traffic lane U2. Passenger vessels including ferries and other vessels of less than 500GT, arriving from Olbia, must use traffic lane E2. A precautionary area has been established in the approaches and entrance to Portovecchio di Piombino, at the N extremity of the TSS. An inshore traffic zone lies between S-bound traffic lane U1 and the SE coast of Promontorio di Piombino. The VTS will provide information, radar assistance and radar pilotage in the approaches to Piombino, if requested. Vessels passing through the Piombino Traffic Separation Scheme must maintain a continuous listening watch on VHF Ch 16 and 12.

Available between 0600hrs and 2300hrs, 2 hours notice required. Capacity 2,200hp.

Prevailing winds: NW'ly (Winter), S'ly (Summer). Strong S or SE winds raise a heavy sea in the roadstead. Berthing may be restricted by S'ly gales.

Should be given to ship's agent 7, 5, 4, 3 days, 48 and 24 hours in advance in accordance with Charter Party. Vessels should send pilot station ETA to the agent and call on VHF 1 hour before arrival. Vessels carrying dangerous cargoes must provide ETA 48 and 24 hours in advance.
