Marsala (ITMRA)

Marsala port handles passengers and other general cargo. The principal import is wood and export is wine.

Marsala is situated on the W coast of Sicily, approx 50nm SW of Palermo.

Draught 5.6m.

Anchorage can be obtained with the head of Diga Foranea in line with the head of Molo di Ponente, bearing approx 021°, in a depth of 11.0m, clay and weed. Small vessels can obtain shelter from NW winds under the lee of Diga Foranea.

Approach and entry: The port is approached from the open sea and entered between the head of Diga Foranea (37°47.1'N 012°26.1'E) and a bank of shoal water fringing the shore, 05nm E, to a distance of 0.35nm.

As a precaution, vessels are moored parallel with the moles so that currents from "The Marrobbio" are met end on.

Compulsory for vessels over 500GT and are available for berthing and unberthing throughout 24 hours. Pilot boards approx 1nm from the head of Diga Foranea. Pilotage is performed by Corpotszione Piloti Trapani/Marsala.

Molo di Ponente Light is exhibited from a white, round tower, 19m in height and attached to a dwelling, standing at the head of the mole. A light is exhibited from a white column with black bands, 6m in height, standing on a pedestal, situated at the head of Molo di Levante. A light is exhibited from a white column with red bands, 6m in height, standing on a pedestal, situated at the head of Diga Foranea.

Mean spring range 0.3m; mean neap range 0.1m.

One tug available.

Prevailing winds: NW'ly. Caution: It is dangerous to enter the harbour in SE gales. On approaching Banchina dei Mille, in the NW part of the harbour, during strong W winds, care should be exercised so as not to drift onto the section of curved quay to the E owing to the presence of rocky depths. The harbour is congested during the period of the grape harvest owing to the presence of tankers and, in winter, because numerous berths are taken for shelter.
