Molfetta (ITMOL)

The port is completely artificial and is bounded by a breakwater and 2 quays, Molo Foraneo facing NW and Molo Pennello facing N. The breakwater shelters the port from N'ly and NW'ly winds. The port handles break bulk, container and dry bulk.

Molfetta is located on the E coast of Italy, 12nm N of Bari.

LOA 160m, beam 15m, draught 7.0m, 10,500DWT.

Safe anchorage is available 1.5nm NW from Molfetta breakwater. Anchorages are as follows (positions from the head of Molo Foraneo (41°12.7'N 016°35.5'E): ..... F1 1nm ENE F2 1.5nm NNE F3 1.2nm N F4 1.5nm ENE F5 1.2nm E F6 1.5nm NNW F7 1.2nm NW F8 1.5nm NW F9 0.7nm NNW F10 0.7nm E The latter two anchorages lie within the compulsory pilotage area establish within 1nm of the harbour entrance.

None. Access to the port is through the head of Molo Foraneo and the NE head of Molfetta breakwater.

The area covered by Molfetta Coastguard for Search and Rescue is bounded by the following points: ..... 1. 42°10.0'N 016°45.0'E 2. 41°22.0'N 016°12.0'E 3. 41°56.0'N 017°15.0'E 4. 41°10.0'N 016°43.0'E Molfetta Port Control coastguard is available on VHF Ch 16 or frequency 2182kHz (HF).

Compulsory for vessels over 500GT and vessels carrying dangerous cargo, available from 0800-2000hrs. Pilots board 1nm ENE of the head of Molo Foraneo.

Molfetta Lighthouse, position 41°12.4'N 016°35.7'E, characteristic ISO.W.6s.

Vessels over 1,500GT are only permitted to enter or leave in daylight. Speed is restricted to 3kts within the harbour entrance. An artificial barrier to protect fish havens and marked by buoys and lightbuoys (special), has been established off Molfetta. Entry into the buoyed area is prohibited.

Range 0.3m. Currents: With strong N or NW winds a current which sets in an anticlockwise direction within the harbour is noticeable.

None.

Tugs are not available at the port, but can be obtained by arrangement from Barletta.

In winter the prevailing winds are between N and E and cause heavy breaking seas in the harbour entrance, rendering entry hazardous. In summer W winds prevail at night, and SE winds during the day. The harbour is protected from all but strong NW winds.

Should be advised to vessel's agent 24 hours prior to arrival.

All vessels are prohibited to move within, enter, or depart through the harbour entrance at a speed greater than 3 knots. Special regulations are in force for vessels of 1,600GT or over carrying petroleum, gas, and other flammable cargoes within the port. Vessels should remain clear of the heads of the moles and the breakwater. A fishing prohibited area lies cantered 5.6km NE of the harbour entrance and may best be seen on the chart. Unexploded ordnance lies on the sea bottom 11.4km NE of Molfetta.
