Eskifjordur (ISESK)

The port situated near the N shore between Mjoeyri and the head. Handling general cargo, fishing, petroleum products and cruise ships.

North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone I, Winter Oct 16 to Apr 15, Summer Apr 16 to Oct 15.

Eskifjordur is located on the E shore of N Reydarfjordur including Budareyri.

LOA 237.95m, beam 32.25m, draught 7.30m, 17,999DWT.

Good anchorage may be obtained in depths of approx 40m in a position 0.35nm or more NW of Mjoeyri and approx 185m offshore. Anchorage close to the town is obtainable in 32m, clay covered with soft mud, off the two principal jetties, with the summit of Skrudhur seen over, and just within, the extremity of Mjoeyri, bearing approx 135°. Better anchorage may be obtained nearer the middle of the fjord, in depths of 33-40m, but here again the clay is covered with the soft mud which is continually being deposited by the streams, and sufficient cable must be veered to ensure that the anchor sinks through the mud and reaches the clay.The waters of the fjord only freeze in exceptionally cold winters but, in years of heavy incursion, polar ice may penetrate to any of the above anchorages.

Mjoeyri Light (white conical concrete tower, 4m in height) (65°04.0'N 014° 00.0'W) stands on the extremity of Mjoeyri, a steep-to sandy eyri, which projects from the NE shore, 1.2nm N of Holmanes.

Range 1.7m.

Few ports experience such strong squalls as Eskifjordhur, especially those blowing out of the fjord. They sometimes occur without warning when the weather appears calm and settled. For this reason a hauling off anchor should always be dropped before going alongside.

Nes Radio at Nordfjordur is recommended to be used for passing messages at long range. Radio station operates throughout 24 hours. International frequency is 2182kHz. Working frequency for Nes Radio is: Land 1761kHZ, ship 2105kHz. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Pilot: Ch 16, 12, 14.

Customs allowance for master, chief engineer and chief mate is 2 bottles of spirits, 1 carton of cigarettes, 2 cases of beer. For crew the allowance is 1 of each. Penalties for non-compliance are a fine and goods are confiscated. Immigration: There are no special immigration procedures and formalities. Customs will grant free pratique to vessels. When disembarking crew/passengers, immigration has to give their permission.

ETA to be advised to agent 72, 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to vessel's arrival. Cargo information if applicable to be advised together with any requirements which master might need the agent to arrange.
