Visakhapatnam (INVTZ)

Visakhapatnam is one of the major ports of India with area comprise of Inner and Outer Harbours. The Inner Harbour consist of 22 berths and the Outer Harbour consist of 7 berths. The port is equipped to handle multiple cargoes, dry bulks, liquid bulk, break bulk and containerised cargoes. The Outer Harbour has berths for larger vessels handling bulk liquid and iron ore, LPG, coals containers and general cargo. The Inner Harbour has a turning basin, shipyard and has berths servicing the fertiliser plant and oil refinery and berths for bulk cargoes including coal, petcoke, alumina, iron ore and molasses. The principal exports are iron ore, other ores, alumina, iron and steel, pig iron, petroleum products, thermal coal, cement clinker, general cargo and container cargo. The main imports are petroleum and LPG/petroleum products, coking coal, limestone, fertilisers such as urea, di-ammonium phosphate, muriate of potash, fertiliser raw materials such as rock phosphate and sulphur, magnesite, liquid ammonia, phosphoric acid, general cargo and container cargo. Visakhapatnam port is under the administrative control of the Board of Trustees and is governed by the Ministry of Surface Transport of the Government of India.

Visakhapatnam is situated on the E coast of India almost midway between Kolkata and Chennai.

Harbour: LOA 390m, beam 50m, draught 18.1m, 209,325DWT. Off Shore: LOA 333m, draught 22m, BCM 174.59m, 330,000DWT.

Approx 81,000,000t of cargo (including 18,000,000t of coal and 14,000,000t of iron ore), 500,000TEU and 2,000 vessels are handled annually.

Designation: Visakhapatnam Port Trust; depth 25.0m; good holding, no shelter. Holding ground, fairly good. Vessels carrying petroleum, gas or explosives will be allocated one of the designated anchorages, in depths from 34m to 42m, soft mud and fine sand, 3nm SSE of Dolphin's Nose Light (17°40.5'N 088°17.6'E). Lightering cargo is handled in a designated area with depths from 28.5-42m, hard mud and broken shell, 5.5nm ENE of Dolphin's Nose Light. Note: It is reported that during the NE monsoon, vessels lie to the current, bow NE, regardless of wind and swell. Prohibited Anchorage: Anchoring is prohibited within an area of the port approaches bounded by the following coordinates: 17°40.2'N 083°17.5'E 17°40.2'N 083°21.5'E 17°41.5'N 083°21.5'E 17°41.5'N 083°18.5'E.

The port is approached from the E and entered through the dredged channel leading between the S and E Breakwaters. The entrance channel has a depth of 19.0m, Outer Harbour 12.0m and Inner Harbour, except North-Western Arm 10.7m.

Four mooring launches available with Visakhapatnam Port Trust.

Compulsory for all vessels over 100t entering, leaving or shifting berth. Send ETA 48 hours in advance. Messages can be sent through Chennai (callsign "VWM") or Visakhapatnam (callsign "VWV"). Signal Station contacts all vessels on arrival giving information on pilot's arrival, berthing instructions, etc. Pilot boards in position 17°40.25'N 83°19.93'E (1.5nm SE of Fairway Buoys). Two pilots are required for night berthing in the Outer Harbour as follows: Vessels of 114,000DWT or greater at the Oil Berth. Vessels of 75,000DWT or greater at the Ore Berth. Two pilots are required for night berthing in the Inner Harbour as follows: Vessels of LOA 186-190m or beam in excess of 32.2m arriving at night. Vessels with beam greater than 32m departing at night. Vessels carrying Ammonia departing at night.

The seaware limit of the port is a line joining the following approximate positions: 17°38.6'N 083°15.6'E 17°34.9'N 083°21.9'E 17°45.0'N 083°30.3'E 17°45.0'N 083°21.1'E.

Six pairs of leading light beacons consisting of pylons, lead to and through the inner harbour channel.

Submarine pipelines: An oil pipeline is laid between the SPM (17°39.14'N 83° 18.92'E) and the shore (17°40.87'N 83°17.82'E). There is another oil pipeline laid between the SW end of Oil Berth (17°40.93'N 83°18.34'E) and a trestle bridge carrying it ashore. Dredging: Usually continuous to maintain depths. Dredgers, when working, may secure with wires to both sides of a channel. The wires are lowered to permit other vessels to pass. The usual daytime signals are exhibited. Daylight arrivals/ departures. LOA 195m, beam 32.26m, draught 10.70m, tide 1.11m. LOA 210m, beam 32.5m, draught 10.5m, tide 1.08m. Panamax Vessels, beam 32.5m, 10.5m, tide 0.85m. Night arrival restrictions LOA 195m, beam 32.26m, draught 9.90m, on rising tide. If vessel's LOA is between 186m and 195m, or if beam exceeds 32.2m, the vessel is to be handled by two pilots. Gas tankers (Ammonia/LPG) are not allowed to be berthed in the inner harbour during night hours. Night departure restrictions LOA 195m, beam 32.26m, draught 10.7m, tide 1.11m. LOA 230m, beam 32.5m, draught 10.2m, tide 0.2m. (Can be more at WQ1 and WQ2 in calm weather conditions). LOA 210m, beam 32.5m, draught 10.5m, tide 0.48m. If beam is 32m or more, it can be handled with two pilots. Only one vessel is permitted to enter or leave the harbours at any one time. Night Restrictions: Tankers: 114,000DWT, are being berthed at OSTT berth with 2 pilots. Ore carriers over 75,000DWT are berthed at OB1/OB2 and GCB with 2 pilots NOM: Unberthing and double banking daylight only. Berthing Priorities for Iron Ore/Pallet Vessels: The Visakhapatnam Port Trust has advised that: 1. No restriction except mother tankers at NOM which are handled during daylight only. 2. No restriction for night navigation for vessels sailing from OB1, OB2, GCB, OSTT and daughter vessels at NOM.

Always a considerably sea swell in the area. Prevailing winds: S to SW (April to October); E to NE (November to March) with the months of March and October being transition periods. Cyclones: In the bay of Bengal, depressions are likely to be encountered during all seasons of the year with a local fall in the pressure. On an average 4 to 5 cyclones per annum may occur. Cyclones are frequent during the month of November. Cyclones are also likely to occur during the month of May.
