VO Chidambaranar is the new alternative name for port of Tuticorin.

Tuticorin (now known as V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust) lies on the SE coast of India in Tamil Nadu State on the W side of the Gulf of Mannar.

LOA 300.4m, beam 45m, draught 14.2m, 180,882DWT.

Approx 41,400,000t of cargo, 750,000TEU and 1,600 vessels handled annually.

The harbour is approached from SE through a 2,400m buoyed channel, it is entered between the end of a short spur extending S from N Breakwater and E Breakwater head. The width of the approach channel is 183m, least depth 12.5m. The turning basin just inside the breakwaters has a diameter is 488m. The harbour basin has a least depth of 11.9m.

Tuticorin Coastguard Station is situated inside the port limits.

Berths are allocated according to the berthing norms and priority.

Compulsory and available throughout 24 hours within the pilotage area for cargo vessels and between 0600hrs and 1800hrs for tankers. The pilot boards at 08° 43.6'N 078°15.9'E, for deep draught vessels, and 08°43.6'N 078°14.9'E for all other vessels.

Zone A: N boundary; from shore, a line drawn E along the parallel of 08°50.0'N to 078°22.0'E. S boundary; from ashore, a line drawn E along the parallel of 08° 41.7'N to 078°20.3'E. E boundary; a line joining positions 08°50.0'N 078° 22.0'E and 08°41.7'N 078°20.3'E.

New Harbour (Zone A): Pandiyan Tiva Light (white round masonry tower with black diagonal stripes, height 23m) (08°47.1'N 078°11.9'E), stands 0.2nm S of the N extremity of Pandiyan Island. Leading Lights: Front light (metal framework tower, white with red bands, elevation 20m) (on N Breakwater near the root of Coal Jetty (08°45.3'N 078° 13.1'E)). Rear light (metal framework tower, white with black bands, elevation 59m) (on the reef 1.5nm NW of the front light). The alignment 311.5° of these lights leads through the channel, marked by lightbuoys at its inner end, to the harbour entrance. Old Harbour (Zone B) Leading Lights: The rear light on a metal framework structure at an elevation of 14m and the front light at an elevation of 9.0m at the head of the landing pier (08°48.0'N 078°09.7'E), in line bearing 277.5° lead through the buoyed channel to the port.

Night berthing of liquid NH3 carriers not permitted.

Currents along the coast outside the islands near Tuticorin generally set with the wind at rates between 1kt and 2kts. At the change of monsoons they are weak and variable. During lulls in the monsoon the current sets into instead of across the Gulf of Mannar. ..... Prevailing winds: W to SW'ly and NE'ly. In the SW monsoon, from about mid May to mid Aug, the wind, though sometimes violent, is invariably offshore and the sea calm or slight.

Customs allowances: One bottle of liquor and one carton of cigarettes is allowed for each crew member per week. Immigration: Immigration Officials will check passports/CDC (Seaman's Books) and issue shore permits. Nationals from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China (mainland) will not be issued with landing permits.

There is a central documentation centre inside the port area and in the vicinity of the Customs House to ensure prompt service to the agencies. The following documents are required: ..... 1. Local port health officer grants pratique after boarding vessel.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival, advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.

Master declares vessel intentions, giving particulars of cargo carried, arrival time and whether any hazardous cargo is being carried.
