Port Blair (INIXZ)

The harbour is safe and is a good port of refuge with depths ranging from 5.5-45m. It is sheltered from NE and SW monsoons. The harbour is entered from N or S of Ross Island. The northern route is used more often as water in the southern entrance is shallower and care is needed to avoid outer Sesostris Shoal. Entry is restricted after sunset.

Sri Vijaya Puram is located in the Andaman Islands, on the E coast of South Andaman, approx 600km W of the coast of Myanmar.

LOA 183.37m, beam 32.2m, draught 9.0m and 47,791DWT.

The best anchorage, well sheltered from all directions, is with the NW extremity of Chatham Island bearing 068° distant 0.65nm in a depth of 13.0m, mud. An anchorage often used in good weather is in depths of approx 16m, sand, approx 300m SW of the jetty on the NW point of Ross Island. The owner or agents of vessels requiring a berth at the wharves shall, as far in advance of date of berthing as possible, apply to the deputy conservator of ports specifying date of arrival, sailing, nature and quantity of cargo to be handled and name of the vessel.

Pilotage is compulsory for vessels over 200GT. Provided by the deputy conservator of ports. The pilot communicates with the vessel on VHF Ch 16. If no response, the operator at port control tower Chatham may be contacted for assistance. Pilot normally boards 0.8nm N of Ross Island.

The port limits are defined as follows: ..... Approaches to Sri Vijaya Puram: A light is exhibited from a concrete tower standing on the reef 0.1nm NNE of the N point of Ross Island. A radio mast 1.5nm WSW of Atlanta Point from which a red obstruction light is exhibited. North entrance channel: North Point Light is exhibited from a round metal tower with red diagonal stripes standing 400m N of North Point (11°42.0'N 092° 45.4'E). South entrance channel: ..... 1. Sesostris shoal consists of 2 coral patches lying about 0.9nm SSE of South Point (11°39.8'N 092°45.4'E). The outer patch with a least depth of 4.0m lies in the approach to the South entrance channel. 2. Sesostris Bay lies on the SW side of the entrance channel between South Point and Atlanta Point 0.7nm NW. Outer part of Sri Vijaya Puram harbour: Perseverance Point Light is exhibited from a white tower with orange bands on Perseverance Point. Command Point is 4.3m in height; a light is exhibited from a white concrete tower 6.0m in height on the point.

No foreign vessel is permitted to enter the territorial waters of Andaman and Nicobar Islands without obtaining permission from the Government of India and Andaman and Nicobar Administration. ..... 1. Only one vessel will be allowed to enter into or depart from the harbour at a time. Movements of vessels are regulated from the port control tower. 2. Vessel will be required to fly, conspicuously, its national flag between sunrise and sunset and hoist its signal letters while entering and leaving harbour. 3. No vessels will be permitted to enter or leave the port between 1800hrs and 0600hrs without the special authority of the Deputy Conservator of the Port. 4. No ballast, rubbish, oil or water containing oil will be permitted to be thrown or discharged from any vessel within the limit of port. 5. Vessel carrying explosives in excess of 45kg onboard as cargo will be required to display the red flag "B" of International Code of Signals. 6. Vessel shall hoist flag "N" (local signal) while entering harbour and flag "F" (local signal) while leaving harbour. 7. The union territory of A & N Islands has been declared as a "Restricted Area" by the Government of India. No foreign vessel is permitted to enter the territorial waters without prior permission from the Government of India/the A & N Administration.

The port has the following tugs: "Vanchi" and "Balshali" 15t bollard pull each. Tugs normally join vessel near the outer harbour. Vessels will be required to provide lines.

Prevailing winds: SW and NE monsoons. During SW and NE monsoons handling of vessels and cargo operations may be delayed due to poor visibility and inclement weather respectively.
