Honavar (INHON)

Honavar is an anchorage port for vessels up to 10.3m draught. The port, which is draught restricted due to a sand bar, has two lighter wharves for vessels with a max draught of 3.0m. Operations are weather dependent and the port is closed in the summer months.The main exports are iron ore, timber, tiles and betel nuts.

Honavar is situated in Karnataka State on the Malabar Coast.

Draught 3.0m. Offshore draught 10.36m.

Good anchorage may be obtained with a conspicuous monument bearing 082° distant approx 3nm in a depth of 9.0m, sand and mud.

The bar is dangerous and constantly changing so that no reliable directions can be given; at LW there are heavy breakers but at HW vessels of up to 3.0m draught may enter.

Honavar Light is periodically exhibited from a mast 0.6nm SW of a conspicuous monument standing at an elevation of 63m on a hill behind the town; this light is obscured by trees when bearing less than 035°. Another light is exhibited from a round concrete hut on a white metal tower close SW of Honavar Light. Both lights at Honavar are exhibited from mid-Sep to mid-Jun. A framework mast stands close NE of Honavar Light and two chimneys are situated on the S side of the estuary, approx 1.8nm SSE of the entrance.

There is no coastal radio station in the port. Messages should be sent via Bahrain or Singapore Radio. VHF: Via Mangalore Coastal Radio Station (callsign "VWL").

Customs allowances: One bottle of liquor and one carton of cigarettes is allowed for each crew member per week. Immigration: Immigration officials will check passports/CDC (Seaman's Books) and issue shore permits. Nationals from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China (mainland) will not be issued with landing permits.

ETA messages are to be given by master/owners to charterers/shippers or consignees 7, 5, 3, 2 and 1 day prior to arrival or as per Charter Party. Message should contain arrival date/time.

Local port health officer grants pratique after boarding vessel.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally, NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.
