Coondapur (INCOO)

Kundapura is an alternative name for Kundapur.

Arabian Sea Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Sep 1 to May 31, Summer Jun 1 to Aug 31.

Coondapur (Kundapur) is situated at the mouth of the Ganguli River on the W coast of India.

Largest vessel handled is 24,000DWT.

The port is closed between May 16 and Sep 15 annually.

Outer anchorage: Vessels of deep draught anchor as far as 5nm from the harbour entrance. Anchorage can be obtained approx 4nm WSW and 11nm SSW of the harbour entrance. Small vessels can anchor in the fairly deep water, within the harbour entrance, E of the town of Gangoli (13°39.0'N 074°40.0'E).

Approach and entry: The port is approached from WSW and entered between two low lying spits of land which form the estuary of the Haladi and Chakra Rivers. Caution: Gangoli Shoals, an area of foul ground and numerous other rocky patches, charted and uncharted, with depths from 3.2-10.0m over them, lie in the outer approaches to the port seaward of the 5.0m contour depth. The inner approaches to the port, between W and the coastline N, are encumbered by numerous rocks both drying and above water; these dangers extend up to 2nm from the coast. Mariners should exercise utmost caution when navigating in the area. Outer anchorages: Vessels should approach the anchorages from S keeping well clear of the dangerous wrecks that lie in the port approaches, as shown on the chart. Inner harbour: With W winds the surf breaks continuously over the bar and it is advisable to enter only with the aid of the local pilot; inside the bar there are depths of 6.4-8.3m. A channel, about 0.17nm wide, leads NNE from the harbour entrance to the berth; E of the channel the entire area dries at low water.

The port limits are as follows: ..... North: A line drawn due W from the N boundary pillar placed on the coastline, E of the rock called "Masthakadap" into the sea to 12.8m contour. East: Coastline of Kundapura 45.7m above HW mark between N boundary pillar and the S boundary pillar including Ganguli River and all branches thereof, as far as navigable, and the shores and banks, within 45.7m of HW mark spring tides including all islands. All private lands and sites excluded. South: A line drawn 225° from S boundary pillar into the sea to 12.8m contour. West: A line joining the two 12.8m points into the sea.

Kundapur Light (13°37.0'N 074°40.0'E) is exhibited from a steel mast, 12m in height. It is difficult to distinguish from other white lights nearby. Tippu Sultan Gudda Light (13°40.0'N 074°40.0'E) is exhibited from a hexagonal column on a round hut, 9m in height. Both lights at Kundapur are exhibited from mid-Sep to mid-May.

The bar across the entrance to Kundapur is continually changing. Continuous surf breaks over the bar with W winds, and it is advisable to enter only with the aid of local pilots. Inside the bar there are depths from 6.4m to 8.3m; the channel, which runs NNE, is approx 400m wide. To the E of this channel, the entire area dries at LW.

There is no coastal radio station in the port. Messages should be sent via Mangalore Radio, callsign "VWL". VHF: Ch 16.

Customs allowances: One bottle of liquor and one carton of cigarettes is allowed for each crew member per week. Immigration: Immigration officials will check passports/CDC (Seaman's Books) and issue shore permits. Nationals from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China (mainland) will not be issued with landing permits.

ETA messages are to be given by master/owners to charterers/shippers or consignees 7, 5, 3, 2 and 1 day prior to arrival or as per Charter Party. Message should contain arrival date/time.

Local port health officer grants pratique after boarding vessel.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally, NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.
