π§ Navigation Information
Anchorages
Outer anchorage: A temporary anchorage may be obtained SE of Ballynacourty Point, in depths of 7.5 to 8.0m, sand and mud, with Ballynacourty Light bearing 315Β° distance 0.5nm. The anchorage affords good shelter to shallow draught vessels in winds from W, but SW gales cause a heavy swell and with winds from NE through to S, shallow draught vessels should seek a more secure anchorage 0.1nm N of Helvick Pier in 3.8m. Small craft can seek a more secure anchorage in The Pool (52Β°05.0'N 007Β° 34.2'W).
Approaches
Dungarvan Harbour can be entered either N or S of Carrickapane (known locally as Black Rock) (52Β°04.0'N 007Β°32.0'W) a rock, 2m in height, which lies in the middle of the entrance. It is covered by the red sector of Ballynacourty Light. Caution: A vessel standing in towards Dungarvan Harbour in summer must keep a good lookout for salmon fishing boats whose nets may be 1nm in length. Local fishermen operate on VHF Ch 6 and may give advice on the position of the nets if requested. Directions: Approach from a position approx 1.5nm NE of Helvick (52Β°04.5'N 007Β° 31.0'W). The approach leads W passing 0.3nm N of Carrickapane and 0.15nm S of Ballynacourty Point Light until the buoyed channel is identified. Approach from SE: From a position 0.5nm E of Helvick Head, Dungarvan Harbour can also be approached from SE, passing: 0.2nm NE of the rocks extending from Helvick Head, then: 0.1nm NE of Helvick Lightbuoy, which marks Helvick Rock (0.5nm NNW of Helvick Head), then: 0.07nm SW of the shallow ledge extending from Carrickapane and 0.5nm NE of The Gainers, an extensive rocky shoal 0.6nm SW of Carrickapane. Channel to Dungarvan: Local knowledge is required when using the channel to Dungarvan.
