Tegal (IDTEG)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. Tegal is a lighterage port with limited alongside berthing, handling mainly local traffic and the occasional foreign vessel. A commercial port opened to foreign trade but unsuitable for deep draught vessels. The main export is molasses.

Tegal is situated on the N coast of Java, 35nm ESE of Cirebon and approx 125nm E of Jakarta.

Harbour: Max depth 3.0m within the harbour. Anchorage: A vessel of 26,000DWT, LOA 150m and draught 7.0m has been worked at the anchorage.

Outer anchorage: Large vessels must anchor 2-3nm NNE of the harbour entrance in depth of 9.0-11.0m where the holding ground is mud. Anchorage can also be obtained in Pelabuhan Tegal in depths of 5.0-7.0m between 1 and1.5nm N of the breakwater heads. Caution: Fishing stakes may be encountered E of the inner anchorage area.

Approach and entry: The port is approached from the lightbuoy (safe water) which lies 10nm N of the harbour entrance and is entered between two breakwaters which extend NNW from the old harbour. Approach from the W or N: From the vicinity of the lightbuoy (safe water) which is moored 10nm N of the harbour entrance, the track to the charted inner harbour leads 8.5nm S. Approach from the E: The track leads clear of Karang Jeruk, a steep coral reef on which there is a rock and from which a light, (white metal framework tower, 14m in height) is displayed lying 4.5nm ENE of the harbour entrance. The channel leading to the inner harbour is formed by two breakwaters, extending in a direction 345° and approx 640m from the coastline. The channel is approx 1,000m long, 50m wide with a depth of approx 3.0m. The port basin has a depth of 3.0m LWS.

Light (red framework tower, 12m in height) displayed from the head of the E breakwater. Tegal Main Light (white metal framework tower, 30m in height (06°51'S 109° 08'E) 0.3nm SSE of the head of the E breakwater. Light (green framework tower, 12m in height) displayed from the head of the W breakwater.

Two tides daily. Negligible current.

Tugs are only available for towing lighters.

Prevailing winds: Variable. The wettest period is from Nov-May and the driest Jun-Oct. The greatest rainfall occurs during the month of January. From Dec-Jan the NW monsoon occurs with strong winds and rough seas. Visibility is good, generally averaging 8nm. However, during rains the visibility may be reduced to 1nm.

Coastal Radio Station: Tegal Radio/PKD 21-class IV A. Frequency: 2182, Tx 2080, Rx 3180kHz RT. Hours: RT (Mon-Fri) 0030-0130hrs, 0400-0530hrs, 0830-0930hrs(GMT). It is recommended to use Jakarta Radio for passing messages at long range, callsign "PKX". Working hours are 0000-0400hrs UTC on 8542kHz and 0000-1200hrs UTC on 8752kHz. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Port: Ch 16, 12, 13 and 14. Hours 0000-0600hrs, 0700-1000hrs (GMT).

Immigration: All crew members must have a valid travel document. Crews from communist countries are not allowed to disembark whilst in port.

Should be advised to agent at 10, 3, 2 and 1 day prior to arrival. In addition to date and time of arrival the Master should also advise the estimated draught on arrival.

Regulations concerning entry: When entry is dangerous, a blue flag is displayed from a mast on the Customs House which is situated on the E side of the harbour. At night a light (special, height 17m) is exhibited from the same position.

Free pratique is granted on arrival. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate (SSCC) and Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate (SSCEC) can be renewed at the major ports.
