Tanjung Balai Karimun (IDTJB)

The Port of Tanjung Balai Karimun, located on Karimunbesar Island, serves as a hub for maritime trade. The main area of focus is on the SE coast of the island where the small harbour is designed to handle general cargo and granite shipments, catering to both inter-island ferries and ocean-going vessels. Offshore, the Karimun STS Anchorage offers deep-water access, serving as a dedicated transshipment area for Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs). This facility, administered by the port authorities, ensures safe and efficient operations for large tankers.

Tanjung Balai Karimun is located on the SE coast of Karimun Island, Riau Province, off the eastern coast of Sumatera, approx 40km SW of Singapore.

Max LOA 334.59m, beam 71.08m, draught 23.0m and 320,122DWT.

Anchorage can be obtained at the following coordinates 00°38.5'N., 103°26.2, S or SE of the jetties at Tanjung Balai in depths of 18.0-27.0m. Small vessels can anchor further inshore nearer the jetties. Due to the strong tidal stream and heavy squalls, these anchorages are not good during the NW Monsoon. During the SW Monsoon, anchorage is available off the E side of Great Karimun, to the SE of Little Karimun, over a bottom of stiff grey mud with good holding ground. Depths over the bank fronting the anchorage range between 8.2-9.1m. This area may have to be crossed to access the anchorage area. Designated anchorage area has also been established in the waters E of Great Karimun, S of the eastbound traffic separation lane. As a result, all vessels anchoring in this area are required to comply with the port procedures An area 6nm NE of Tanjung Balai, used for ship to ship transfers and should be avoided by other vessels. If approaching from the E, the ridge of hills on the E side of the town is remarkable for the colour of the steep, barren sides. A light (port hand), which marks the entrance to the harbour and a lightbuoy, (starboard hand) are moored, 0.2nm S and 0.4nm SE of the town. The channel is approx 8km in length and 1.6km wide with depths of 6.0-23.0m LWS. The port basin in approx 3km wide with a min depth of 6.0m and max depth of 23.0m LWS.

A light to the N of the Island (white framework tower, 40m in height), visible in the N part of the strait.

Tides: Tanjung Balai Karimun has three diurnal tides with a max height of 3.0m at full moon. Current: The tidal and wind currents of the South China sea has a large impact on the currents. The velocity of the currents range from 0.3-0.9kt.

Traffic separation lanes are in place.

The climate is topical and heavily influenced by the sea climate. Rainfall: The wet season occurs from Oct/Nov-Apr. Average annual rainfall is 2,000-3,500mm. Dry season runs from Jun-Oct. Temperature: The average annual temperature is approx 26.9C.

Radio: Coastal Radio Station: PKJ4 Mobile, 8AK Fixed. It is recommended to use Jakarta Radio for passing messages at long range, callsign "PKX". Working hours are 0000-0400hrs UTC on 8542kHz and 0000-1200hrs UTC on 8752kHz. Inmarsat communication is possible.

Immigration: All crew members must have a valid travel document.
