Tanjung Emas (IDSRG)

The port has container and bulk facilities, also a calling port for foreign cruise vessels. Cargoes handled include iron ore, grain, fertilisers, coal and cement. Nearby SBM's accommodate tankers.

Tanjung Emas, also known as Semarang, located at a central point along the northern coast of the island of Java.

SBM: LOA 185m, 36,000DWT. Ocean Wharf: Max draught 9.0m. Largest vessel handled: For general cargo "Ocean Host"; LOA 224.3m; draught 7.5m; 46,885DWT; 29,160GT. The largest passenger vessel handled "Rotterdam"; LOA 228m; draught 8.6m; 37,783GT.

Approx 6,000,000t of cargo, 3,600 vessels and 269,000 passengers handled annually.

Outer anchorage: The recommended anchorage is approx 3nm N of Semarang Light (6° 57'S 110°25'E) in depths of 8.0-12.0m and within a radius of 1nm of position 6° 54.0'S 110°24.5'E.

The port is approached from the lightbuoy (safe water), moored 5nm N of Semarang Light (6°57'S 110°25'E) through entry channel length 6,500m with min width of 150m and min depth at LWS is 10.0m, on the alignment (176°) of leading lights which lead S through the buoyed entrance channel. Then enter between the heads of the breakwaters, from which lights (port and starboard beacons, 14m in height) are exhibited. Caution: It is advisable, especially during the NW monsoon, to keep close to the W breakwater as the tidal stream sets across the entrance. It has been reported that while the breakwaters give a poor radar response, the light beacons at the seaward end and the channel marking buoys show up well. Turning area: A turning area, 350m wide lies at the S end of the buoyed channel off Tanjung Emas Ocean Terminal.

Semarang is an alternative name for Tanjung Emas.

Pilotage waters cover the harbour area including the oil terminal in the Java Sea from the parallel of 06°53.67'S to the coast at the meridians of 110° 23.67'E and 110°28.0'E. Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels exceeding 177GT. Call pilots on VHF Ch 12, available throughout 24 hours. For berthing in daylight only between 0600 and 1800hrs, a pilot can be obtained on request to the Harbour Master; unberthing at any time. The notice required for a pilot is 6 hours prior to arrival and 3 hours prior to departure. Pilot boards in the anchorage area, but in the NW monsoon may board under the lee of the W breakwater or the vessel may be led in by the pilot boat.

The limits of Semarang, extend approx 6nm seaward.

Major light: Semarang Light (white metal tower, 30m high) (06°57'S 110°25'E). Leading lights: Front light (white triangle point up, on mast 12m in height) situated approx 420m NE of Semarang Light) Rear Light (white triangle point down, on mast 23m in elevation) (600m S of the front light).

Priority for berthing given to warships, container and passenger vessels, followed by government logistics vessels.

MHWS is 1.3m and MLWS is 0.1m. The max current speed is 0.31kt in a direction of 324° during ebb tides. With the flood the rate is 0.3kt in a direction of 164°. Cross currents exist at the port entrance although the current is weak.

The port has 3 tugs of 800hp, 870hp and 1,500hp. Additionally there is a pilot boat of 360hp and 2 mooring boats of 210hp each.

Prevailing winds: Jan-Mar NW. Sep-Dec NW. Apr-May N-NE. Jun-Aug E. During the NW monsoon, for the most part it either blows hard, accompanied by rain or it is almost completely calm. There is seldom any intermediate phase. The finest weather is often replaced, without any warning, by squally weather. The monsoon wind is never S of WSW; the main direction of the sea wind during this monsoon is NW and the land wind is reduced in strength. During the SE monsoon, the land wind usually blows regularly from ESE to SE throughout the night until 0900hrs; then diminishes and reverts to ENE at approx 1200hrs. Until 1400hrs there are light variable winds and then the sea breeze arrives suddenly from NNE, quickly raising a swell and sea and blowing with great regularity until approx 2000hrs. The wind then veers to ESE, being less regular for a short period and becoming steady again at approx 2100hrs. Around sunrise, the atmosphere is very hazy, but after a couple of hours of sunshine it becomes clearer, although the land in the interior often remains obscured. Towards afternoon it becomes hazy again. During this monsoon not more than 2 hours a day of even moderately good visibility can be expected.
