Loch Gairloch is situated on the W coast of Scotland and Gairloch Harbour is situated in the NE portion of Flowerdale Bay.

LOA 80m, draught 10.0m.

Small vessels can be anchored N of Longa Island, during S gales this anchorage becomes untenable when the wind is from the W.

Loch Gairlock entered between Sron na Carra and Rubha Ban is generally free from dangersin its outer part. From the vicinity of 57°43'N 005°49'W, a white sector (080°-102°) of Glas Eilean Light (metal pedestal, concrete base), situated on the summit of Glas Eilean (57°43'N 005°42'W) which is 7.0m in height and conspicuous, leads E through the entrance and into the loch for 3.25nm, clear of all dangers, passing S of Sron na Caillich then N of drying rocks which extend 0.075nm NW from Sron na Carra then N of Nares Rock, which lies up to 0.3nm off Sron a' Muilt, the NE entrance point of Port Henderson, then S of marine farms which are moored close S of the coastal bank, with depths of less than 10.0m over it, which extends from the fringing reef for a total of up to 0.25nm from the N shore of the loch, then N of a marine farm which is moored close N of the coastal bank, with depths of less than 10.0m, which, with a fringing reef, extends up to 0.1nm N from the S coast of the loch between Leac Bad an Tionail and Sron nan Gabhar, 0.6nm E, then S of marine farms which are moored off the coastal bank at the W end of Strath Bay, a wide and exposed bay which occupies the NE corner of the loch. From a position 0.4nm W of Glas Eilean Light, the track alters to the ESE, passing NNE of the rocky bank, with depths of less than 5.0m over it and a depth of 3.6m near its outer edge, which extends 0.15nm N from Eilean Horrisdale, then SSW of a shoal, with depths of less than 10.0m over it, which extends 0.1nm SSW from Glas Eilean, then at least 0.1nm SSW of Seana Chreag, which is the NW entrance point of Flowerdale Bay then NNE of the reef fringing Fraoch Eilean, which is covered with heather and is conspicuous.

All waters below the level of HW enclosed by a line joining Seana Chreag (57° 42'N 005°41'W) to Goban Innis a Ghobhainn, 0.3nm ESE.

Gairloch Hotel, 0.85nm NE of Glas Eilean Light A church, 0.125nm S of Gairloch Hotel. Shieldaig Lodge (1.75nm SSE) which is a conspicuous hotel standing near the shore at the head of Loch Shieldaig. A light is occasionally exhibited from the head of the pier.

Aerial photography indicates that numerous dangerous underwater rocks, with less than 2.0m of water over them, exist within Loch Gairloch. Mariners are advised to navigate with caution in these areas.

Tidal streams in Loch Gairloch set as follows: ..... Interval from HW Ullapool Remarks -0620 Ingoing stream begins -0020 Outgoing stream begins The streams are very week in the middle of the loch but attain rates of 0.2 to 0.5kts near to the land on both sides. The highest rate occurs in Caolas Beag (57°44'.4N 005°47'.0W). Mean spring range 4.6m, mean neap range 2.2m.
