Ajaccio (FRAJA)

The port which has over 950m of quays and provides facilities for the handling of general cargo, bulk oil products, liquefied gas, is an important passenger ferry terminal and provides facilities for yachts and small craft.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Dec 16 to Mar 15, Summer Mar 16 to Dec 15.

Ajaccio is situated on the W coast of Corsica.

LOA 175m, draught 9.0m.

Approx 940,000t of cargo and 1,163,000 passengers handled annually.

There is good anchorage off Ajaccio, but SW and ENE winds, if strong, usually cause a moderately rough sea. Anchoring and fishing are prohibited within an area, which extends NE from Jetee de la Citadelle across Baie d'Ajaccio. Anchoring is prohibited within a radius of 350m centred on the head of Jetee des Capucins. Mouillage de Capucins, E of Bassin des Capucins, is used for large vessels, with depths of 20.0-26.0m, sand and mud, very good holding ground.

The compulsory pilotage area is situated E of a line joining the following: ..... 1. La Guardiola Beacon Tower (41°54.5'N 008°43.3'E). 2. Pilot boards 0.5nm SE of Citadelle Light Beacon (41°55.06'N 008°44.53'E).

The harbour limits extend from Jetee de la Citadelle NNE to the head of the bay.

Jetee des Capucins, which forms the N side of the basin, is marked at its head by a light structure (white column). The head of Jetee du Margonajo, painted red and white in bands, and conspicuous, is marked by a light structure (white column) 6m in height. An extension projects 140m N then 100m NE from near the head of Jetee du Margonajo. A light is exhibited from a white tower with a red top on the head of the extension.

The port does not handle petroleum products or gas between 2200 and 0600hrs local time. The port is enclosed by a regulated area. The boundary extends E from Citadelle Light passes S of Les Scoglietti then N to the coast. There is a prohibited area which encloses the Aspretto Military Base and Les Scoglietti, on the E side of the port. When a signal is displayed vessels must remain at least 0.5nm from the E side of Pointe d'Aspretto.

A Vessel Traffic Service Scheme operates for vessels over 1,600GT carrying hydrocarbons or other hazardous cargoes, they should send the following details 6 hours in advance: ..... Vessels when originating from a port or anchorage situated outside the EU and planning to anchor in French territorial waters must provide the following: 1. Name and callsign of vessel 2. Nationality 3. Vessel length and draught 4. Port destination 5. ETA at the pre-arranged anchorage area 6. Expected time of getting underway 7. Envisaged itinerary 8. Exact technical description of dangerous or pollutant cargo, reference numbers (ONU), if the occasion arises, by the United Nations, IMO type of risk determined by the conformity of the IMDG code to the IBC and IGC agreements, amount of cargo and position in the vessel if they are transported in mobile tanks or several containers, the identification marks of the former or the latter 9. Number of crew onboard.

Tugs are not available.

Notify ETA upon departure from last port of call, then every 24 hours before arrival with confirmation to vessel's agent 12 hours prior to arrival. Vessels over 1,600GT carrying hydrocarbons or dangerous substances should maintain a VHF contact with La Parata Signal Station (41°54.1'N 088°36.9'E) whilst within the Approach Channel.

Flags to be displayed: French national flag (courtesy). During bunkering "B" flag and on arrival "Q" flag.

Request for pratique to be made to the Harbour Control prior to arrival. Renewal of Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificates possible with prior notice to agent.

NOR should be tendered in accordance with the Charter Party.

Confirmation of arrival. Eventual gas free confirmation in case of OBO.
