Jakobstad is located in the W of Finland, on the E coast of the Gulf of Bothnia.

LOA 241.79m, beam 35.2m, draught 11.0m, 61,215DWT.

Approx 1,500,000t of cargo handled annually.

Vessels may anchor in Ado Roadstead (63°43.5'N 022°38.5'E), in depths of 11.0-13.0m. Alternatively anchorage may be obtained off Masskar (63°43.7'N 022° 35.3'E), but local knowledge is necessary. Anchorage for larger vessels may be obtained, in depth of approx 20.0m, in the outer channel.

The port is approached from the W and entered via a Pietarsaari/Jakobstad channel, marked by leading lights, lightbuoys and buoys. There are three lines in the channel marked with boards with maximum authorised draught of 11.0m. The main approach channel from seaward leads between Kallan Light and Nygrundet Light, the outer channel from Kallan to Masskar is open and unsheltered from winds and the inner channel is used for pilot boarding station; approx 1.5nm W of the Pietarsaari/Jakobstad lighthouse. The fairway channel has length approx 7.0nm, width of 120m including the harbour basin for swinging area in diameter of 300m at Laukko quay. The area is normally ice-covered from December to April. During ice formation winds and currents may create a heavy brash ice barrier between Pietarsaari edge mark and Masskar. Later on ice ridges may occur off Pietarsaari edge mark. Ice movement may cause buoys and spar buoys to be pressed under ice (surface) over the whole length of the channel. .

Pietarsaari is an alternative name for Jakobstad.

Kallan Light House (red tower, white band, 2 galleries; wind generator; height 19m) (63°45.1'N 022°31.5'E) standing on a rock which lies at the S end of an extensive area of foul rocky ground. Pietarsaaren Majakka Light-structure (yellow concrete tower, black top; wind generator) (63°44.6'N 022°32.0'E) standing on Nygrundet, one of several rocks awash. Rummelgrund/Bredhallan Leading Lights (red rectangles, yellow stripe): Rummelgrund Light (63°44.7'N 022°34.9'E) standing on a small islet. Bredhallen Light (0.3nm E of the front light), standing on the N side of an islet. Adoskatan Leading Lights (red rectangles, yellow stripe): Front light (63° 43.4'N 022°37.3'E); rear light (0.2nm ESE of front light). Bormastargrund Leading Lights (red ractangles, yellow stripe): Front light (63° 43.1'N 022°42.4'E); rear light (0.3nm ESE of front light). Leppaluoto Leading Lights (red triangles, point up): front light (63°42.5'N 022°41.5'E) on the pierhead; rear light (0.1nm SSE of the front light).

At night, tankers carrying more than 4,000t of oil are prohibited in the channels between the sea and the tanker berths. The protective zone extends to a distance of 25m from the vessel when liquid operation is unloading.

The approaches are covered by Sector C of the Bothnia mandatory scheme. Reporting: Vessels are required to report on VHF Ch 67 (as detailed below) and shall maintain a continuous listening watch on Ch 67. ..... 1. N bound vessels are requested to make an advance report 20nm S of Nordvalen Lt (63°32.2'N 020°46.6'E). 2a. All vessels shall report 1 hour prior to arrival at the pilot boarding station (both vessels requiring pilot assistance and those exempt are required to report). 2b. All vessels shall report on approaching the port. 2c. Vessels to be anchored shall report on anchoring. The report is acknowledged by the VTS centre which provides the vessel with information on other vessels, fairway and weather conditions and other factors affecting safe navigation.

Customs allowances: For a crew member's own use there is an allowance of 1 carton of cigarettes and 1-2 bottles of spirits. Penalty for exceeding the allowance depends on the quantity the allowance was exceeded by. Immigration: If a vessel is carrying passengers, the ship's agent is to be advised in advance for an immigration check. There are no restrictions for crew members.
