San Sebastian (ESSSG)

The port is the main harbour for Gomera Island and has extensive facilities for ferry traffic. A new passenger terminal has been built at the head of the main quay and land reclaimed to the E of this to provide additional storage area.

The port of San Sebastian is situated on Isla de la Gomera, part of the Canary islands, 15nm W of Isla de Tenerife.

Draught 7.5m.

Anchorage can be obtained within the harbour but clear of the ferry that swings on entering and making its berth. Depths in the entrance are 13.0m to 27.0m, sand and coral, depths decrease gradually towards the beach. A mole extends SSW from the shore, 180m W of La Gila, quayed on the W side. There are depths of approx 15m at the head of the mole decreasing to 4.0m near the root.

The harbour is entered between the head of a breakwater to the E and a light buoy (port hand) moored close E of Los Garanones.

Compulsory for vessels over 500GT. Available 24 hours. Pilot boards vessel 1 to 2nm E of the main breakwater head E corner light.

Punta de San Cristobal Light, 15m high, has a round tower with a red band (28° 05'.6N 17°06'.0W). Breakwater head light is 7m in height and is a round tower with a green truncated conical top and base (28°04'.9N 17°06'.4W). Outer breakwater extension head is an E cardinal truncated pyramidal tower, yellow band (28°05'.3N 17°06'.4W). Leading lights: Exhibited at the head of the bay to the W of the mole, which in line bear 016.5°. The front light, from a white mast, 7m in height, painted with red bands and a diamond shaped topmark, painted with red and white chequers, stands 90m W of the root of the mole. The rear light, a similar structure, stands close NNE of the front light. A monument stands in position 28°05'.0N 17°07'.1W.

Range 2.0m (springs), 0.6m (neaps). A considerable riptide can build up around Punta de San Cristobal, about 1nm NE of the port.
