Roseau (DMRSU)

Roseau is the capital and main port. The port of Roseau consists of the Cruise Ship Berth, a ferry terminal and a fishing complex. There are facilities for general cargo, Ro-Ro vessels and tankers at Woodbridge Bay. Exports consist mainly of bananas and other fruit (grapefruit, oranges, limes and coconuts) while imports are made up of general cargo and oil.

Roseau is situated on the SW coast of the island of Dominica, which lies between Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Windward Islands.

The port has an open roadstead with good anchorage in depths of 27-75m.

Compulsory for all vessels over 100GT. Pilotage is available for anchorage on request. Send ETA 24 hours in advance together with request for pilotage. Tankers should include their draught and cargo details in the ETA message. Establish VHF contact 2 hours in advance of ETA. Pilot boards 0.9nm W of Roseau River. Pilotage is also compulsory for Woodbridge Bay Terminal (15°18.5'N 061°23.9'W).

Fort Young Light (15°17.4'N 061°23.7W).

Anchorage off the town is treacherous and cannot be recommended due to the narrowness and steepness of the bank, which, combined with an E wind, has resulted in vessels drifting to seaward during the night.

Range 1.8m. Flow: In Roseau Roads, inshore of the deep water anchorage (0.175nm SW of Fort Young Light), the current tends to flow in a NW direction. In Woodbridge Bay it has been reported that a set to the E, which was experienced beyond 0.5nm from Woodbridge Bay Ocean Berth, changed to a set to the W within 0.5nm of the berth. Swell: Even with an E wind and calm weather a W swell runs through the anchorages and affects Woodbridge Bay Ocean Berth.
