Portsmouth (Dominica) (DMPOR)

Prince Rupert Bay is wide and open to the West. Anchored vessels are particularly exposed to weather coming from this direction. Shoreside facilities consist of a cruise ship berth located at The Cabrits, Fort Shirley and a wharf at Long House which has been extended to accommodate Ro-Ro and smaller cargo vessels. Portsmouth is the major banana shipping port on the island.

Portsmouth is located in Prince Rupert's Bay on the W coast of Dominica Island.

Max LOA 300m, beam 25.46m, draught 6.3m and 2,700DWT.

Anchorage is best available in Prince Rupert Bay for the majority of vessels in Dominica. The anchorage is generally clear and protected from the winds barring W'ly ones. Anchorage may also be taken 0.3nm offshore between Portsmouth and the Picard Estate, approx 1nm S. Depths for the anchorage range between 9.1 to 18.3m.

From 15°34.52'N., 061°29.00'W, then in a direction of 180° for 2.2nm to 15° 32.45'N., 061°29.00'W, then along the foreshore at the HW mark of Prince Rupert Bay to 15°34.52'N., 061°29.00'W, being the area that includes all waters and ocean bed lying within the defined limits.

Two churches are used as landmarks, the first comprises of a grey spire and red roof in the town of Portsmouth and the second is located to the E and are both prominent from offshore.

Normal entry hours are 0600-1800hrs. Other times by special arrangement. In the vicinity of the port there are several stranded wrecks situated offshore. Weather conditions may not permit entry to the port and as a result smaller cargo vessels will travel to the harbour at Woodbridge bay for offloading.

Immigration: Crew and/or passengers to be repatriated require a valid passport and a ticket to their country of destination. Sufficient funds should also be available to cover their stay in Dominica.
