Hvide Sande (DKHVS)

The port is primarily concerned with fishing but commercial traffic is also handled. Hvide Sande has a fishing fleet consisting of 60 vessels, approximately 4,000GT.

The port of Hvide Sande is situated on the channel which has been cut through Holmsland Klit to give access from the North Sea to Ringkobing Fjord.

In Osthavn, the maximum size of vessel handled is determined by the dimensions of the lock which is 34m long, 16.5m wide and with a depth over the sill of 4.0m below mean sea level. Vessels with LOA longer than 33.5m can be canalled through the lock at certain stages of the tide.

Hvide Sande is approached by a channel across two sand ridges, and then by a dredged channel between two outer moles. The W entrance to the channel is protected on its N side by a breakwater, with a length of 180m and farther in by 2 outer moles which are awash at HW. Approx 0.25nm within the entrance the channel leads between 2 short inner moles into an outer basin which is connected to Ringkobing Fjord by Afvandingssluse, a drainage sluice at its E end. The controlling depth is normally about 2.5m below MSL in the channel over the sand ridges in the approach to the dredged channel, but the position and the condition of the channel across the sand ridges are often changed by weather.

Pilotage is not normally compulsory but a pilot may be required at any time. The port authority may decide to impose compulsory pilotage depending upon a vessel's size, the weather and navigational conditions. The pilot will embark seaward of the outer sand ridge.

The harbour area includes the entrance channel between the outer moles, all basins W of the lock, the approaches to the lock, the Osthavn and Hvide Sande Hjordhavn which are E of the lock.

Hvide Sande Light, 56°00.1'N 008°07.4'E is exhibited from a grey framework tower 19m in height standing 0.275nm ENE of the S outer mole head.

The mean tidal range is about 0.75m but W winds can raise the water level by up to 3.5m and E winds can lower it by up to 2.0m. Current: A strong current runs out of the entrance channel when the drainage sluices are open. In these conditions it is advisable to keep well clear of the next vessel ahead.
