The port generally remains ice free throughout the year. The port consist of Ferry Harbour, Freight Traffic Harbour, North Harbour, New Pier and the New Harbour expansion area. Stena Oil marine fuel terminal located in the new, outer part of the harbour.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Zone for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Frederikshavn is situated on Jutland at the N end of the Kattegat.

LOA 186.93m, beam 27.4m, draught 14m, 35,692DWT.

Approx 2,500,000t of cargo and 780,000 passengers handled annually.

Vessels can anchor in Sondre-Red, good holding ground outside the harbour entrance, S of the leading line, in depth of 10.0m, fine sand. The STS operations are carried out at the following position: Frederikshavn Transhipment 57° 25.0'N 10° 46.0'E Vessel restrictions are: Max. draught 22.0m and 350,000DWT

Dredged approach channel has a depth of 8.0m. Regarded as the harbour's main thoroughfare (from Route B), is the section from the Frederikshavn Lightbuoy, (safe water; Racon "T") to the mouth of the harbour (track leads on the alignment of leading lights, 303.5°) and from there through the outer harbour up to and including the approach between Ferry Berth No 3 and the northern cross pier. Traffic from the North Harbour, Ferry Berth No 4 and the Naval station shall, in the outer harbour, yield to traffic taking place in the longitudinal direction of the harbour's main thoroughfare. From the outer harbour there is an approach to the ferry harbour/freight harbour, to the North Harbour and to the Naval station.

Vessels should send request for pilots 6 hours in advance to Danpilot, Skagen, (VHF Ch 26, 12 and 13 may be used) confirming 1 hour before arrival. 3. Pilot boards in position 57°24.5'N 010°37.3'E. It is recommended that vessels, whose Master does not know the local conditions, either use a pilot, or seek information with the Port Authorities before arrival or departure. E'ly winds may cause up to 0.8m LW and in such conditions it is of great importance to use a pilot or seek information by the port authorities about present weather conditions. Enquiries can be made by calling the port authorities on VHF Ch 16, or by calling "Lyngby Radio."

The harbour area is delimited by the breakwaters and by straight lines through the coordinates defined as below: ..... 1. 57°26.139'N 010°33.843'E, Northern breakwater. 2. 57°26.055'N 010°35.806'E, kneepoint, green steel pole with top. 3. 57°24.787'N 010°36.275'E, kneepoint. 4. 57°24.543'N 010°35.884'E, kneepoint. 5. 57°24.500'N 010°35.151'E, kneepoint. 6. 57°25.928'N 010°33.013'E, Southern breakwater.

Leading lights: Front light (red tower, height 7m) on S breakwater head (57° 26.0'N 010°33.2'E). Rear light (height 28m) on S inner mole. Lights are exhibited, both N and S of the outer harbour. There is a yacht harbour, protected by breakwaters, S of the Naval harbour. It has depths of 2.5m in the entrance and from 1.5-2.5m within the harbour. A light is exhibited from the head of the E breakwater; the head of the W breakwater is floodlit. A pair of beacons (yellow diamond topmarks), near the root of the S breakwater of the yacht harbour, mark an outfall pipe which extends 0.3nm ESE from the shore and is marked at its seaward end by a lightbuoy. Leading lights for the main entrance channel are formed by a combination of the light at the head of the S breakwater, as the front light, in line with a rear light exhibited from a grey framework at the head of the S inner mole, bearing 303.5°. Lights are also exhibited on each side of the entrance to the Naval harbour, at each end of the floating docks inside the fishing harbour and from the head of the N inner mole.

Speed limits: Within harbour limit outside breakwater 12kts; outer harbour 7kts; elsewhere 3kts.

Range 0.3m. W gales can raise level by 1.2m, and E gales lower it by 0.8m. The tidal streams set across the harbour entrance and can exceed 2.0kts. Winds between SW and NW give a S going current; winds between S and NE give a strong N going current.

There is intensive ferry traffic but no VTS.

Lyngby Radio (the only coast radio station in Denmark) is recommended for passing messages. The station works throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat communication is possible. Customs allowances: One bottle of spirits and 200 cigarettes per person are allowed. If quantities in excess of the allowance are found the penalty is a fine. The size of the fine depends on the amounts in excess of allowances. Clearance is handled by the agent but Customs Officers may board at any time to check the validity of the documents handed to the agent. Immigration: There are no restrictions for crew. Passengers of nationalities which require a visa are only allowed transit in Denmark for 36 hours.

To be advised to the Harbour Office 24 hours prior to arrival with details of the Crew list, Vessel's ISPS security level, Last 10 ports visited and all other relevant ISPS documents. All vessels should report to the port control on arrival approximately 10 minutes before the approach buoy, and 10 minutes before departure or moving berth (VHF Ch 12 may be used).

Calls may not be made by pleasure craft and small boats without previous permission from the Harbour Superintendent. Personnel are not permitted within 50m of the outer walls of the naval base.

Pratique is not required for Danish ports. Agent may request a Maritime Declaration of Health from the Master. Ship Sanitation Control and Exemption Certificates can be renewed in large ports.
