Approx 400,000t of cargo and 27,000TEU handled annually.

Small vessels can anchor approx 0.5nm SE of the Customs House Pier. Vessels of any size can anchor in the bay. A good berth, in a depth of 16m, lies about 250m S of the head of New Quay. Small vessels may anchor, in a depth of 6m, about 0.3 mile SE of the T-head pier which fronts the custom house.

Pilotage is compulsory inward and optional outward. The pilot boards near Dona Maria Pia Light.

Dona Maria Pia Light is exhibited from a white octagonal tower, 21m in height and attached to a dwelling standing on Ponta Temerosa. Leading Lights: Infante Dom Henrique Light, the front light, is exhibited from a red framework tower, 3m in height, standing at the head of the custom house pier. Alfandega da Praia Light, the rear light, 90m NW of the front light, is exhibited from the E gable of the custom house, 10m in height. The lights in line bear 303.5° and lead to the anchorage.

Foul ground, with a least depth of 9m, extends up to 0.2 mile S of Ponta Temerosa. Five special yellow markers to the N, E and SW of Ponta Temerosa, mark an underwater cable area.

Range: 1.3m Springs, 1.1m at Neaps.

Tugs are available.

Prevailing winds: NE'ly. The anchorage is safe in the dry season, from Dec to Jun inclusive, for vessels of any size, during the rainy season the wind occasionally sets in strongly from the S with a heavy swell and short sea. Strong gusts come over the land into Porto da Praia during the dry season when the wind is fresh. With strong NE winds, little protection is afforded by the NE shore and there is a considerable swell.
