Matanzas (CUQMA)

The port is formed by an inlet length of 8km and a width of 6km. Deep water is located 120m from shore; depth in the fairway is over 180m. Exports are principally sugar, molasses and liqueurs. Imports are mainly general cargo, fertilisers and oil.

Matanzas is situated at the mouth of the River Yumuri and River San Juan in Matanzas Bay, northern Cuba.

LOA 252m, draught 17.0m, 150,000DWT.

Approx 80 vessels visit the port annually.

The following anchorages are available (with reference to Castillo San Severino (23°03.6'N 081°33.5'W): Casacajales: (0.7nm E): Depths 19-46m, gravel, mud and boulders. Accommodates 2 large vessels. North: (0.3nm S and 0.4nm SSE): Depths 11.0m, mud with good holding ground. Accommodates 1 vessel 170m LOA, draught 8.2m. South: (0.6nm SSE): Depth 12.0-16.0m, good holding ground. Accommodates 1 vessel 170m LOA, draught 8.2m. Indio: (0.5nm S): Mud with good holding ground. Accommodates 1 vessel 69m LOA, draught 4.9m.

Bahia de Matanzas is entered between Punta Maya (23°06'N 081°28.4'W) and Punta Sabanilla, 3nm SW. The anchorages in the SW part of the bay are entered through 3 channels that pass between three shoals situated 1nm from the head of the bay. Directions for entering the harbour: From a position NW of Punta Maya Light the track leads S and then SW into the inner part of Bahia Matanzas, through waters clear of charted dangers, passing E of Punta Sabanilla, (23°04.7'N 081°31.6'W) and then direct to the berth as necessary. Vessels proceeding to anchorages within Bajo La Laja should normally use either the N channel between Bajo Nuevo and the shore N, or the S channel between Bajo La Laja and Bajo California, which have depths of 15.2m and 24.0m, respectively. The middle channel has a depth of only 9.4m and is seldom used.

Pilotage should be requested 24 hours in advance and is available throughout 24 hours. Pilots embark 1nm SW of Punta Sabanilla except in the case of tankers, which embark 1.5nm NE of this point, if wind conditions do not exceed 25kts.

Punta Maya Light (white round tower, 32m in height) 23°06.0'N 081°28.4'W.

Range 0.6m.

Available and are regulated as follows: For tankers between 2,000 and 110,000DWT at least 2 tugs will be used. For tankers greater than 110,000DWT at least 3 tugs will be used. For all types of vessels from 120m LOA and upwards at least 1 tug will be used.

Prevailing winds: E'ly. As the bay is open to the ENE a heavy swell sets in with fresh trade winds and may interfere with docking operations. Tankers berthed at the Supertanker Base must leave harbour if the wind exceeds force 7.

Initial ETA should be sent on departure from last port. If time permits, further ETA's should be sent 10, 7, 5, 3 and 1 day prior to arrival. The messages must include date and time of arrival and expected draughts on arrival.

Free pratique should be requested by radio. Health Certificates can be renewed by phytosanitary organisations.

Normally tendered when a vessel is alongside and ready to work cargo or on arrival at the outer roads of the port if no berth is available.
