Caibarien (CUCAI)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. The city of Caibarien together with Cayo Frances and its anchorage, which lies 16nm NE of the city, form the port.

The city of Caibarien lies in the S part of Bahia San Juan de los Remedios.

Caibarien City: Draught 2.0m. Cayo Frances Anchorage: LOA 155m, draught 6.1m. No 3 Outer Anchorage: Ships of draught over 6.1m.

The following anchorages are available in Cayo Frances Anchorage (with reference to Punta del Asta (22°39'N 079°14'W)). No 1: (La Caldera) (1nm S) provides anchorage for three vessels with a length of 150m. Minimum depth is 7m, mud and clay, good holding ground. No 2: (La Poza) (2nm W) provides anchorage for 6 to 7 vessels with a length of 190m. Depth 9m, sand and mud, good holding ground. No 3: (Outer) (1.75nm WNW) provides anchorage for 6 large ships with a draught of more than 6.1m. Depths 9m to 12m, stone and coral, good holding ground, but without shelter from wind or sea.

Approach and entry: The anchorage is entered W of Punta del Asta (22°39'N 079° 14'W), the W most point of Cayo Frances. Under normal conditions the mainland is not visible from the vicinity of Cayo Frances and the entrance to Bahia San Juan de los Remedios appears as a wide stretch of open water. A channel, marked by light beacons and with a depth of 2.5m, suitable for vessels with a draught of up to 2.0m, leads SW from Cayo Frances Anchorage to the city of Caibarien.

Compulsory and available 24 hours. Pilot is picked up approx 0.5nm from the Catalina Buoy, at the entrance of the Cayo Frances Anchorage.

Customs Coast Radio Station "CLA CU" can be used for passing messages. The station operates throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat is the preferred method of communication and should be used to contact agents, whenever possible. VHF: Ch 16; 13.

Initial ETA should be sent on departure from last port. If time permits, further ETA's should be sent 10, 7, 5, 3 and 1 day prior to arrival. The messages must include date and time of arrival and expected draughts on arrival.

Free pratique should be requested by radio. Health Certificates can be renewed by phytosanitary organisations.

Normally tendered when a vessel is alongside and ready to work cargo or on arrival at the outer roads of the port if no berth is available.
