Shediac (CASHE)

Shediac is the best harbour on this part of the coast, providing berths for vessels of shallow or medium draught. The port is closed by ice in winter, the navigation season is Apr 15 to Dec 15.

Shediac (Pointe du Chene) is situated on the SW shore of Shediac Bay, Northumberland Strait, in the Gulf of St Lawrence.

Max draught 4.8m.

The recommended anchorage position is in the entrance channel, NW of the public wharf in approx position 46°14.5'N 036°32.0'W. At the head of Shediac Harbour there is good anchorage for small craft in depths of 1.5 - 3.0m.

The port is approached over the shoal ground of Shediac Bay, through three reaches of buoyed channel. The least depth in the fairway of the entrance channel is 3.8m. Caution: The light beacons, beacons and buoys may be moved to suit changing conditions in the channel.

Pilotage is available but is not compulsory. Pilot boards in position 46°17'N 064°25'W. To avoid a delay in obtaining a pilot, the master of a vessel bound for Shediac must report via any coast station by radiotelephone or rediotelegraph the vessels ETA to "Pilots Shediac" at least 12hrs before arriving at the pilot boarding station. ETA must be confirmed or corrected 4hrs prior to a new ETA. Time used must be GMT. The master of a vessel that is to depart or make a move within the compulsory pilotage area must report to "Pilots Shediac" 4hrs prior to such ETD. Time used should be local, if GMT is used it must be expressly stated.

Pointe du Chene Light (framework tower, 3m in height) 46°14.5'N 064°31.7'W, on a breakwater head, close E of the public wharf.

Vertical clearance: A bridge with a vertical clearance of 2.4m spans River Scoudouc from Shediac to Chapman Corner. A bridge with a vertical clearance of 1.5m spans Shediac River between Shediac Bridge and Indian Point.

Mean spring range 1.6m; mean neap range 1.2m.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly. NE gales, which are common in the autumn, bring a swell into the harbour near HW, making the deeper areas unsafe. The harbour is generally closed by ice from the first week in December to early April.

Halifax Coast Guard Radio (callsign "VCS") can be used for passing messages throughout 24 hours. Amver messages can be passed through "VCS". Halifax Coast Guard CRS has sites at Sambro (44°28.33'N 063°37.27'W); Ecum Secum (44°57.87'N 062°08.92'W); Kingsburg (44°16.53'N 064°17.25'W). HF and MF frequencies are used, depending upon distance from station.

Allowances: For each officer or crew member the allowance is 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 0.9kg of tobacco and 1.1 litres of liquor or 8.2 litres of beer or ale. Penalty for non compliance with the above is forfeiture. If ship's bond count is not accurate, overage results in forfeiture and penalty, under results in payment of duty, taxes and penalty. Immigration: Routine filing of documents is undertaken by the vessel's agent. There are no restrictions on crew and/or passengers except those who require a visa. If they do not possess a visa they must remain aboard the vessel.

Vessel's ETA should be sent to ECAREG (telex: 019-22510 CCG MRHQ DRT) 96 hours prior to arrival, also notify VTS 12 hours in advance at the zone limit. Pratique should be applied for when arriving from a country which has infectious diseases or death onboard from unknown causes. Pratique is applied for through the vessel's agent. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate and Exemption Certificates can be renewed.

NOR normally tendered when vessel secured alongside berth except most tankers tender on arrival pilot station or at port limits.
