St John's, a naturally sheltered, ice free port, is the most E'ly harbour in Canada. It is the distribution centre for goods destined for the hinterland and the primary service centre for offshore oil activity in Newfoundland. It is also the largest fishery centre on the island, accommodating up to 150 fishing vessels. The city of St John's is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Canada Highway, running 905km to Port-aux-Basques.
