Petro-Canada (Gulf Canada Products) operates a refinery for the production of lubricants on the coastline of Mississauga. Their facilities consist of a 550m long jetty stretching out into Lake Ontario, adjacent to the Holcim (Canada) cement factory and Jetty at Clarkson, 0.5nm to the SW.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Mississauga is located in Ontario, SW of Toronto on the N shore of Lake Ontario.

The berthing pier extends out into the Lake and fendering is solid rubber so that energy absorption has been significantly improved. Vessels should note that the Jetty is very exposed and E winds can quickly increase wave action at the docking area sufficient to cause vessels berthed there to move and make contact with the jetty structure. Vessels are berthed on both the E and W sides of the finger pier, each side having 2 transfer manifold locations. The outer manifolds serve berths 1 East and 1 West and the inner manifolds serve berths 2 East and 2 West. There is no shore gangway and vessels must arrive at the facility with the ship's gangway ready to be deployed. The elevation of the dock is approximately 2.0m above lake level at Chart Datum. Berth 1, East and West (Hydrocracker Bottoms): There is more depth of water in Berth 1 East, which is the berth more frequently used by deeper draft vessels. Petro Canada prefers vessels to berth with their bows to seaward. Connection to the transfer manifold is by rigid cargo transfer arm. The transfer manifold is located 44m from the outer end of the dock. Berth 2, East (White Oil and Base Lubricants): Connection to the transfer manifold is by rigid cargo transfer arm. Petro Canada prefers vessels to berth with their bows to seaward. The transfer manifold is located 134m from the outer end of the dock. Berth 2, West (Conventional and White Oil Base Lubricants): Connection to the transfer manifold is via a hard arm. The transfer manifold is lcoated approx 134m from the outer end of the dock and approx 88m offshore of a protruding pump house structure. Petro Canada prefers vessels to berth with their bows to seaward.

Water Depth: Great Lake water levels fluctuate during the season and Masters should obtain latest data when planning their UKC for berthing and while on the berth. The Canadian Hydrographic Service provides continuous information via telephone or internet. All vessels must follow their company ISM policies for UKC. Masters are advised to be in full compliance with the Canadian Coast Guard guidelines reference to net UKC when alongside the terminal. Copies of these regulations can be obtained form the vessel's agents. The Jetty is a very exposed port area and even moderate adverse weather conditions can cause problems. Waves can break over the structure. Masters should be ready to leave the berths at short notice, on full power. Ice: Masters of laden tankers destined for or departing the Terminal are advised that vessels must be in compliance with the "Joint Industry - Coast Guard guidelines for the control of oil tankers and bulk chemical carriers in ice control zones of Eastern Canada" when transiting the Gulf and River St. Lawrence in winter. All tankers destined for the Terminal are required to have on board the latest edition of the "International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers and Terminals - ISGOTT". Vessels are advised to bow out alongside if an emergency evacuation is required for the vessels to stop cargo operation and evacuate the berth when easterly winds of 15knots are developing.

Surface currents generally move counter clockwise around Lake Ontario at an average rate of 0.1kn. Surface current is significantly affected by winds, especially from the E, and currents can reach in excess of 0.5kn in sustained winds.

For Canada Border Services Agency, vessels visiting the Petro Canada Dock at Clarkson may contact the CBSA Office at Hamilton International Airport. Agents are only available during regular business hours, Monday to Friday (0800 hrs to 1600 hours local time). A computerised 24hr answering service is in operation. Allowances: One carton of cigarettes and 1 bottle of liquor per crew member, per port, is allowed from the bonded store. Penalties for non compliance are seizure of the goods and fines. Immigration: Immigration authorities are notified by Customs only when crew changes are to take place or there are stowaways onboard or deserters. No one is allowed ashore until the ship is cleared.
