Yampi Sound (AUYAM)

Yampi Sound consists of two deep-water facilities which handle hematite iron ore products; Cockatoo Island and Koolan Island. The latter, owned and operated by Mount Gibson, is located to the E of Yampi Sound, whereas Cockatoo Island is under repair following a change in ownership during the mid 2010's.

Yampi Sound, an inlet of the Indian Ocean, is located on the N coast of W Australia, between King Sound and Collier Bay.

Max LOA 229.07m, beam 32.27, draught 15m and 83,375DWT.

Approx 3,028,000t of cargo handled annually.

For Cockatoo Island, quarantine anchorage, in depths of 18-29m, located 0.75nm WSW off the Collins Cove Lighted Beacon. Holding ground for the quarantine anchorage is mud. Anchorage, 14-18m, may be taken by the W entrance of The Canal with good holding ground, mud. The E extremity of Tarrant Islet bearing about 341° and Naires Point Light bearing about 100°. For Kooland Island, two anchorage zones are located 2 and 2.75nm WSW of Naires Point.

For Cockatoo Island, the depth in the approach channel lies at 20.1m. For Kooland Island, approach can be made from either the N through the Parakeet Channel or from the W through Yampi Sound.

At Kooland Island, vessels must have at least 6 mooring ropes (not wires) longer than 200m at each end, 4 of which must be independently operated by winches. The maximum draught at the berth is 15m plus tide less 1.5m UKC.

Pilotage is compulsory for Yampi Sound and is operated by Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA). Under KPA pilotage is compulsory for all vessels with an LOA over 35m or have a pilot exempt master onboard. A pilot exemption may be given to vessels up to LOA 130m. For Cockatoo Island, pilots board 1.5nm WSW of the island whereas pilots board 0.9nm SSW of the W'ly extremity of Tarrant Island for Koolan Island.

For Cockatoo Island, a light is located 0.5nm NW of the berth on top of an old power station. The light is shown 24hrs before and after departure for vessels scheduled for loading at the berth.

It is noted that vessels are prohibited to proceed E of the berth without a pilot for Cockatoo Island.

Tidal streams within Yampi Sound are generally set E'ly with the flood, and W'ly with the ebb tide. At Cockatoo Island the maximum tidal range is 9.9m. The tidal stream sets E except for a period 1hr before, to 3hrs after HW, when the tidal stream sets W'ly. The current attains a rate of approx 3kts on the ebb and flood. At Kooland Island the maximum tidal range is 8.9m. At spring tides these streams are most pronounced, however they become confused at neap tides. Further advice on tides and tidal movement can be obtained from the Company's Port Officer.

Two tugs are currently available at Kooland Island; "Hastings" and "Bunbury".

Prevailing winds: W'ly (Nov-Mar) during the wet season. Thundersqualls are frequent during this period and are accompanied with gale force winds. From Apr-Oct frequent SE'ly winds and light W'ly sea breezes. Cyclones: Nov-Mar cyclones can be expected. Temperature: Summer months the temperature reaches 40°C and during nightfall it drops to 14°C.
