Namibe (AOMSZ)

Namibe is a small port handling general cargo, and the principal fishing port of Angola. Port Saco, lies in NE corner of the bay and handles bulk carriers exporting iron ore and the import of oil.

Namibe (Mocamedes) is situated on the S coast of Angola in Baia de Namibe.

Max LOA 225m, beam 32.26m, draught 19.0m, 75,200DWT.

Approx 800,000t of cargo, 19,550TEU and 180 vessels handled annually.

Good anchorage is available 450m NW of Fortaleza de Sao Fernando (15°11.6'S 012°08.7'E) in depths of 9.0m, bottom mud for vessels waiting to berth at Namibe.

Minimum depth in the approaches to Namibe is 10.5m. Vessels approaching from the S should be aware that Banco Amelia sand bank is not marked by lights. Porto Saco: From a position SSE of Ponta do Giraul (15°08.2'S 012°06.7'E) in the vicinity of the pilot boarding area the alignment (037.5°) on the leading lights lead NE into the bay and towards the berth.

Pilotage is compulsory for entering, leaving and berthing/ unberthing, both for Porto Saco and Porto Namibe. The pilot boards at the entrance to the bay between 0600hrs and 2100hrs. Berthing is not undertaken after 2000hrs. There are no restrictions on departures, but must be pre-arranged through the pilot.

At Porto Saco the alignment of the following marks may be of assistance when berthing: 1. Front beacon (15°07.7'S 012°08.1'E) 2. Rear water tower (50m from beacon).

Berthing can only take place until 1900hrs in the summer and 1800hrs in the winter. At the Commercial Terminal departure is possible throughout 24 hours. Port Saco has restrictions on arrival and departure only until 1800hrs.

Springs 1.7m, neaps 1.4m. A heavy swell can be experienced in the bay at any time of year. At Cais Commercial it oscillates parallel to the quay.

2 tugs of 2,200hp available at Port Saco, both equipped for fire fighting and rescue at sea.
