Guiria (VEGUI)

Formerly an oil terminal, the port is now primarily a fishing port and a pilot boarding station for Gulf of Paria pilots. Exports of small quantities of food and consumables pass through the port.

Tropical.

The port of Guiria is located 45nm W of Port of Spain (Trinidad) and 300nm NW of Guyana.

LOA 72m, draught 5.4m and 1,323DWT.

Anchorage can be obtained E of the harbour entrance in depths from 10-11m, good holding ground of mud.

Compulsory for foreign vessels and available 0600-2359hrs. The port is also a primary boarding area for pilots for the W part of the Gulf of Paria. Pilots for the Orinoco, Rio Pedernales and Rio San Juan are obtained at Guiria and are compulsory. Pilots are also disembarked here by outward bound vessels. Incoming vessels requiring a pilot must indicate their ETA by radio to "Capipuerto Guiria" 72, 48 and 24 hours in advance. The whistle signal for a pilot is 1 long blast and 3 short blasts. Pilots usually board 0.25nm NW of the breakwater. If a pilot is delayed, a vessel should anchor close seaward of the lightbuoy.

Recalada Guiria (white GRP tower with orange bands, height 12m) (10°35'N 062° 17'W).

The max tide rise is 1.5m at ordinary spring tides with an average of 1.2m.

The climate is tropical with a rainy and dry season. Average temperatures range from 80-90°F. The prevailing winds are trade winds which have a max speed of 50kts and an average of 12kts.
