Alcan (USZAK)

Depths in the harbour cannot be relied upon because of the frequent changes and vessels should be extremely careful of the natural and structural hazards. The harbour is very exposed to N winds and is much affected by severe winter storms, although partially protected from other directions. The port mainly handles general cargo.

Alcan is situated on the NW side of Shemya Island.

Alcan Harbor is entered 0.6nm NNE of the W extremenity of Shemya Island. Hazards: Great care is necessary on account of below-water rocks and obstructions. The below-water remains of a breakwater, marked by kelp and on which the sea breaks in bad weather, extend 0.4nm N from the W entrance point. It was reported that danger from unexploded bombs existed on both sides of a channel about 0.15nm wide extending N from the E side of the W entrance point.

Breakers can be seen along the submerged remains of a former breakwater which extends about 0.4 mile N from the point on the W side of the harbour. A wreck marks the end of the point and the submerged remains are marked by kelp. Several rocks are visible at low tide up to 91 meters N of the point; mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution in this area.
