Yorktown (USYKW)

Main traffic handled at Yorktown is pulpwood, petroleum products, military supplies and shellfish.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Yorktown is approx 45nm WNW of Cape Henry and due N of the ports of Hampton Roads in Virginia.

LOA 184m, beam 32.2m, draught 11.13m, 51,218DWT.

Anchorage may be obtained in York river above Tue Marshes Lighthouse in depths of 11.0-18.3m.

York river is formed by the junction of Pamunkey river and Mattaponi river at West Point, 29nm above its entrance. It has a broad fairly straight channel which is well marked.

Pilotage is compulsory in the York River for foreign vessels and United States vessels in foreign trade. Pilotage is optional for vessels in coastal trade which have, onboard, a licensed pilot. Deep draught vessels drawing 11.6m or more, bound for York river, should arrive at the pilot boarding area, off Cape Henry, 3 hours before HW at that cape.

All vessels in York River are to proceed at reduced speed to prevent damage to the facilities on both sides of the river below Coleman Memorial Bridge, situated 6.5nm W of the entrance. There is a speed limit of 12kts above Tue Marshes Lighthouse. Coleman Memorial Bridge: Has 2 swing spans with a vertical clearance of 18m when closed. It spans the river between Yorktown and Gloucester Point, 0.5nm NE.

Tidal streams follow the general direction of the channel except in its narrower parts where they have a tendency to set on to the shoals. The rate of the tidal streams and the times of slack water vary in the river.

Ice sometimes interferes with navigation for short periods during severe winters, but in ordinary winters navigation is not interrupted below West Point.
