Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for vessels of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Rockland is situated on W Penobscot Bay, Maine.

Approx 103,000t of cargo handled annually.

There are 4 anchorages available, 3 in the harbour and 1 exposed, all marine clay bottom composition. Harbour Anchorages: ..... Area Harbour area Notes A N Depth 6.0-14.0m. For vessels over 30m in length B S Depth 5.0-11.0m. For vessels over 30m in length C W Depth 4.0-6.0m. For small craft. A channel, 460m wide, is left between Areas A and B. No vessel may anchor in the channel or within 0.15nm of any wharf without permission.

A federal project provides for an approach channel 5.2m depth and 3 branch channels depth 4.2m each with a turning basin, leading to the northern, western and south-western parts of the waterfront. All channels are buoyed.

USCG lifeboat/search and rescue station.

Compulsory for all foreign vessels with a draught of 2.7m or over. Notify pilot 48 and 24 hours prior to arrival. West Entrance boarding area: Monhegan Island Buoy "14M" 43°45.3'N 069°22.5'W.

The most prominent objects approaching Rockland Harbor are the radio tower of station WRKD, which is lighted at night, the Aerolight at Knox County Regional airport and the radio tower and signal mast at Rockland Coast Guard station on Crockett Point (44°06'N 069°06'W). The light at Owls Head and the light at the end of the breakwater are also conspicuous. A radio tower on Benner Hill, approx 2nm westward of Rockland Harbour is also prominent.

Two small motor launches, used as tugs, are available at Rockland. Tugs up to 1,800hp are available at all times at Belfast.

Winter winds NW/NE, 13-35kts. Summer winds SW, 10-25kts, occasional heavy fog. The harbour is exposed to E winds and NE winds raise a heavy sea in the SW part of the harbour.
