πŸ“‹ Port Overview

βœ— ISPSβœ“ ECA
The port, located within the Metlakatla Indian Community Reservation, handles fishing vessels (predominantly salmon) and a weekly barge from Seattle which services the local community. Fast ferries are able to visit the port however the regular inter island ferry service to Ketchikan has moved its operations to the Ferry Terminal in Annette Bay. The reason to move the ferry service from Metlakatla to Annette Bay was because the journey was a lot shorter, it was more dependable during bad weather and easier for all marine operators. The port was used by the Ketchikan Pulp Company (KPC) Sawmill from 1979-1999. This then closed due to the fact that the federal government ceased logging operations in the Tongass National Forest in 1999. KPC had been delivering wood products to markets as far as Japan.
