The port handles mainly passengers, containerised cargo, fish and petroleum products.

Juneau is situated on the mainland side of Gastineau Channel in Alaska, close to the border with British Columbia, and some 160km S of Skagway.

LOA 294m, draught 8.9m.

Anchorage is available off the principal wharves at Juneau, and NE of the cable area, in depths of 22.0-35m, soft ground. Permission must be obtained from the Coast Guard COTP prior to anchoring in this area from Jun-Sep.

Juneau is approached through the S part of Gastineau Channel, and the main port facilities are entered between Lawson Creek Bar Light No 3 (58°17.3'N 134° 24.3'W) and No 2A Lightbuoy 0.325nm ESE.

The USCG maintains search and rescue service vessels at the port.

Compulsory, with few exceptions. Pilots are available at all times and can be embarked 10.2nm WSW of Point McCartney Light (56°57.9'N 134°20.9'W), or from a crew boat 1nm NW of Point Retreat Light (58°25'N 134°57'W). A VHF listening watch is maintained on the pilot boats 1 hour prior to arrival.

The port area of Juneau includes all facilities between Douglas 1.75nm SSE of the city, to Auke Bay approx 9nm ESE.

Landmarks (with positions given from the SW pillars of Juneau Douglas Bridge (58°18'N 134°26'W): Union Oil tank farm (1.25nm ESE). TV tower (0.425nm WNW).

The Juneau -Douglas Bridge has a clearance of 15.5m.
