The port handles pulp cargoes and petroleum products.

Bucksport is situated on the Penobscot River, midway between Searsport and Bangor, 11km from the mouth.

Compulsory. Pilot boards at one of the following positions: ..... 1. At Manana Whistle Buoy "14M" off Monhegan Island 2. S of 2WB at Wooden Ball Island 3. 0.5nm S of lighted whistle Buoy "WP" 4. Mosquito Island at the MP buoy Pilots require 24 and 12 hours ETA to be sent, with confirmation being sent to the vessel via the agent. Accurate ETA's are required as no pilot boats are kept on station.

A road bridge crosses Eastern Channel at the end of the town with a clearance of 5.2m; an overhead power cable close to the bridge has a clearance of 12.87m and another overhead cable crosses Penobscot River from the W end of the town, with a clearance of 44m.
